I have posted my feelings on this as a reply to a post before but would like your views on the subject.
I feel strongly that the few native top flight footballers are only top flight because they are surrounded with really great foreign players and once they are taken out of the equation what we are left with is not enough talent to make up a really good squad for the national team. If you take Goalkeepers as an example how many does Capello really have to pick from once the foreign goalies in the premiership are out of the equation? Same goes for every other position on the park. Is it time we stopped trying to chase glory in European competition by filling up our teams with oversees players at the expense of our youngsters here who do not get a chance and is it time for a cap on the amount of oversees players in our premiership teams for the good of the national squad?

In a word no.

International football is only something that is played seriously every 4 years at the WC. Club football is played seriously every week of the season and is a better standard than international, at least for Europe's top club sides.

The premiershipo is great to watch and is sold around the world because it's the most popular league and one of the best two along with Spain. That revenue stream from tv keeps the top players coming to England because they pay the best wages. I would like to keep watching that high standard.

The Dutch, Portuguese, Argentina and French sides don't have many players from their own leagues and they do ok usually. Young English players need to accept like other European young players that they need to be prepared to play abroad and not moan that they cant get a game for top English clubs. If young English players played in Portugal or France or Germany they'd come back better players for it.

Absolutely spot on.

If you think British football has a problem with foreigners.
The italian AND European champs DIDN'T have ONE italian in their starting line up

Its the grass roots where the answer lies, too many fat kids, too many streets clogged with cars where kids played. Britain has chosen a life style which is not going to produce the best on any sports field.

Harry Redknapp said something similar recently. He said that when he was a kid, all the parks were full of kids playing football. Not organised games, just kids playing football. Jumpers for goalposts, rush goalie, etc. Now, when you drive past a field it's normally empty. He said that's the reason we're not producing the great players we used to. He said that kids nowadays want to stay indoors and play on their games consoles.

The 'developing' nations are overtaking us because the kids in the 'slums' see football as their way out.
