Having the flag out cannot be a cause of slow play as we basically always had to have it out, therefore today asking for the flag to be removed cannot be a contributing factor to present day increased duration of rounds.

Flag hokey-cokey has only come about as a result of the change in the rule that allows us to leave it in.
Agree. But when a group is doing it, they are slower than if they were not.
Once out, leave it out. Or preferably never out.
Out is really only there for the case of leaning flagsticks. Everybody should be leaving it in 99% of the time. Or if people want it out for short putts, agree within the group, that once its out, it stays out.

Sorry - but that’s nonsense, and so I’m out (see what I did there 😉).

Blimey didn’t think it was a debate anymore

Some want it in , some have it out and using common sense the people playing the golf manage to sort it out without it impacting the game or the pace of play

And yes we have people that want the flag put back in , and it takes two seconds 🤷‍♂️

So you're a dickhead for doing something you're allowed to do ....?
Right.......
Everyone has it out, 1 person wants it back in. We are talking about slowing down play. They survived for ever with the flag out until a couple of years ago but suddenly they can't putt with it out. Who's the dickhead?

What if its a fast downhill putt or some other reason they want it in? I just don't see how that makes them an "expletive".

Plenty of times it can speed up play too.

In my match at the weekend my oppo had a putt the full length of a long green. I was closer in a green side bunker.

Rather than faff about having to attend the flag, then have to go around the green into the bunker, assess the lie, choose club, take stance etc etc I could go through my routine and hit my shot within a couple of seconds of his ball coming to rest.

How people get bothered by it is beyond me. Luckily we have the skinny bottom flags and nearly everyone leaves it in. The few that don’t only really take it out within 10ft and not seen anyone ask for it to go back in once it’s out. It’s the out crew that have most issue with this for some reason in my experience (we have a pretty decent scratch team too 😉)

That's fair enough but is seldom the case.

Rubbish !

Most 3 or 4 balls will see someone take the pin out and put it back in while standing fairly close to the hole during the putting phase - it takes just a second or two to do so if the people are on the ball. It doesn't matter if the flag was out a few years back as there was always an option of having it attended so they didnt "survive" forever with the flag out.

I play a lot of scratch tournaments, it's only the odd dickhead that asks for the flag to be put back in. Most have it out as soon as the hole can be clearly seen.

You’re a delightful chap aren’t you.

I’m an innie. In reality, if I’m putting 1st the flag stays in, I hit my putt and if it’s not a tap in, I’ll take the flag out while my pp putts out. I’ll then put the flag in (which has to go back in at some point anyway 🙄) and putt. If he’s putting 1st I’ll take the flag out, hold it until he’s finished and then stick the flag back in (which has to go back in at some point anyway 🙄) before putting myself. It really is a non-argument, only being argued by people who want everything their own way.
