I played my first 18 holes yesterday and scored 119 with one bogey and one par ..the biggest club I hit was my 5 iron as it's the longest iron I have ..I did hit the driver twice and lost the ball on both occasions I'm truly terrible with driver, woods and the hybrid ..would I be better off getting some longer irons or getting a lot more practice in with the other clubs???

Don't worry about distances off the tee when you're first starting out. It's better to keep the ball in play.

When I first took up golf I used to use my 7 iron. It obviously doesn't go as far as a driver but I could at least hit it reasonably straight and on or near the fairway.

Well done on getting your first round in, more info please (where did you play and who with etc) you now have a target to beat next round.

Practise is the only way to improve, get down the range until your comfortable with the longer clubs

And most important of all did you enjoy it?

I played at widney manor in Solihull I was playing with 20 other lads....I'm down the range later to have 100 balls or so...as for enjoying it I loved it I could of done another 18

Cheers. Shall I just carry on with my 5 for a while and get some practice on the range with my bigger sticks????

If you can hit your 5 iron keep using that off the tee. Whilst you're at the range check out lessons or group lessons. It's the best way to get started and will teach you the basics straight away

Pretty much, doesn't matter too much so long as you enjoy yourself which can be difficult if you are looking for balls all the time. Bring the driver out on the course once you are happy with it on the range.

Definitely would advise against getting longer irons as a replacement before you have worked on the stuff you have with a professional.

Glad you enjoyed the game. I would stick with the five iron off of the tee for now, but worth getting a lesson with a driver or three wood or having a go on the range to see if you can get some consistency with those. Remember to look for a clean strike rather than trying to hit it hard, easier said than done I know.

Thanks for the words of wisdom...I went down the range yesterday and hit a few woods and driver at 50% with a decent outcome..I also booked a few lessons with the pro..

Congrats on the first round :) definitely get some lessons if you haven't had any before, I've had a few so far (only did my first round 2 weeks ago) changed my grip and started changing my swing and since then my driving is awful!! Lesson next week is with the driver. But I bought a tonne of cheap balls on gumtree, found 150 for 12 quid. Still decent makes. So when I go to the course I'm still gonna hit my driver and won't be too bothered about loosing them. (Obviously keep an eye out for other golfers on adjacent holes who might be in danger if you slice/hook it.) I find that on the course I feel a bit more pressure and don't hit quite as well. But that will come with practice, I didn't wanna get in the routine of always hitting an iron off the tee though.

I've had 4 lessons I'm going to book another 4 ..I went round the course with 3 other competent golfers so they where explaining rules apart from my uncle telling me to pull the putter out from 80 yards.I got a fair few old balls in my bag ...I didn't want to hit my irons off the tea but there was satisfaction on hitting the ball fairly straight instead off trying to find the ball after a horrid slice..

That's a good point actually, I think it may do more harm than good if you are slicing 90% of shots into the trees. :) my last round I hit 4 into the trees on the first 6 holes and gave up with the driver :)

I'm heading out with a friend for his first proper 18 on Monday. It's only about 6000 yards but it's 3x longer than any round he has had before!

He, like you plans to hit nothing over a 5 iron. Seems sensible, I'm also aiming to play my way round rather than try and overcome it with distance. I see my 4 iron being my main tee club, considering throwing in the 3 as its a little less wayward than the hybrid off the tee, although a lot shorter.

We shall see how it goes, as long as we have fun that is all that matters in the end.
