Participants either compete against others of similar ability or there is handicapping - golf is far from alone in this regard.

Agree, but golf is probably the only one where, when that mismatch occurs, it is rarely the best player that wins.

Many non-Americans would regard it as the second best major to win, while Americans generally regard their Open as more desireable, but still behind the The Masters. Third best major - I still wouldnt say no though.
