That was a John Jacobs one I believe, and it suckered me for decades as I tried to adhere to it, when what I needed to do was really commit to giving the ball a good skelp…instead I have tried to manipulate my swing to hit it better…and I’ve mostly failed.It is amazing how many brainless phrases became lingua franca of golf coaching before there was any understanding of the mechanics of what was going on, until about 20 years ago.

Indeed, that's what I was going to say. Striking it better definitely helps - but more distance comes from more speed.Probably more hitting it faster.
