I was thinking about this last night and wondering how much it would cost me to put my fist set of clubs back together and how well I think I'd play with them now ?

I've still got a few of the clubs, but don't use them anymore.

I'd need to get a set of G10 irons with reg (£90), TM Burner Driver (£40) and 3w (£30) with Reg shafts. I think I still have my old TM R7 hybrids, my TM Rossa putter and my old vokey wedges.

So about £160 I think.

If I'm being honest, I'm not actually sure I'd play that much worse with those than my current £1,000+ bag of clubs.

Food for thought ?

I threw out my first set of irons only yesterday! Regal, 3i - SW. Reckon they cost £110. Driver and 3 wood were Fazer Firepower andGod only knows what they cost. Putter was a colossal, heavy mallet thing, and cost me £20.

wouldn't cost much anyway, just by that new guys Dunlops for 50p

I think my first 'set' were McGregor Tourney, I bought a half set and gradually added to them as and when I could afford to, I honestly cant remember what my woods were, they were persimmon but the make eludes me. I shall now use Google to try and find a set.

Memories

Wilson deep red MAXX driver
Deep red 3 wood
Wilson deep red II irons 3-SW
A 60 degree "pot belly" wedge that cost me about 15 quid
Wilson harmonised mallet putter

Bit of a Wilson fanboy back then.

Mind you my second name is Wilson. So it could have been an early attemp at personalisation.

Thinking about it. They currently live in my brother in laws garage.

Might dig them out for a play.

Bloody good stuff the deep red. Especially for the price.

If you don't count my children's set then the rest are in my dad's garage. Some of them get used from time to time but mostly by one of my mates around the par 3 course.

I am not sure how much a set of Peter Thompson irons (I think they were Dunlop)would cost. They were ancient when I got them in 1987. The pro threw in a Wilson persimmon 5 wood which was a dream to hit and I had a Pinseeker driver and 3 wood.
I don't think that set would perform too well against my current bag, but I think anything reasonably modern would. I was looking at my stats on howdidido and in 2008 my average comp score was almost 4 shots better than today, with a set of Ping ISI K irons ( which I hated) a Nike Sumo driver and TM R580 woods. No hybrid, no specialist wedges, no GPS, no simulators or lessons on iPad and using 2008 balls.

First set were Petron Impala. Not even sure they are still around
I've got a set in my garage.
I've got a 1 1/2 wood to go with them.
I thought I could slot a couple of irons into my present set when 2 irons had to go away for repair..... I was shocked to find I could only just manage a half decent shot with them.
Technology has come a long way in the last 30 years for sure.

Since my first set of clubs was a set of odds and sods my parents bought me from the local paper, I wouldn't even know where to start.

Blimey after giving this a bit of thought turns out I've still got mine in the garage!!!

TM Firesole Bubble Shaft Driver, TM Bubble Shaft Burner 3 & 5 Woods, Titleist DTR graphite shafted Irons 3-SW and even to this day I use my putter from that set - Ping Sedona.

Might put it all in the bag one day when the weather's better and see what happens.

First set of clubs were a £70 set from sports direct. The putter would be harder to come by though.

Would I play any better? Nope. Would I play any worse. I would say without a doubt.

My first full set were also Dunlop Peter Thomson blades in late 70's. Also started with half set (3,5,6,9,PW, SW). Gradually added others. Last one was the 8 which I bought after being given it to use at a Pitch and Putt course!

They were really nice looking clubs and popular so you do see them on e-bay from time to time. They were in Dunlop's line up for many years and there are a few different versions.
