Funny you should mention this... I was playing a match against one of the guys at our club last week, German guy, originally from Stuttgart. In Germany you have to have a license to play golf. The license comprises of 2 parts, a test on the etiquette and rules of golf and an aptitude test (to prove you can swing a club properly). without this license you simply cannot play golf at a course in Germany.

Not sure it would work here, but its an interesting idea nonetheless..

That would also mean lots of people simply wouldn't bother taking up the game IMHO.

This might not agree with other people's opinions, but isn't that a good thing?

I'm all for as many people taking the game up as possible, but I for one could live without the people that can't be bothered to learn the basic rules and etiquette, or are 50/50 to make contact with the ball when they swing.

I assume the aptitude test doesn't preclude people that aren't very good, just the ones that have absolutely no idea.

Quite honestly i have encountered more problems on golf courses (slow play, having balls hit at me) from immaculately dressed 40 something year old men who thought they were above the rules than "Pikeys" who simply didn't know them.

I didn't really know the rules when i first stepped on a golf course but i learned through experience. Which is the best way. I would personally like to think that letting faster groups through and not hitting balls at people is basic common sense and something that doesn't have to be learned by anyone with half a brain.

There are idiots everywhere, including on golf courses. And they aren't all chavs.

Having to pass an exam just to be allowed on a course would, for me at least, simply add to the air of snobbery that still exists quite widely in this game.

People seem to revel in getting worked up about these things rather than simply rising above it. It's a game for gods sake.

I think a test on etiquette and play is a good idea. And there should definitely be sections in it on choosing wine, speed of play, caddie management and when to give a putt.

Not at all. But golf is a leisure activity. Noone should need "permission" to partake in it.
