You should try playing with a photographer crouching behind you. That was fun.

You are right though, I am not put off by back ground noise either. When you are on the first tee, and all the banter goes deathly quiet for you to tee off, that is more disconcerting than if it all continued.

There are things we can learn to ignore or blot out & others we can't. Ironically Photographers don't bother me, even in my line of sight.

But as soon as we let something bother us, its then when any skill at the game exits stage left.

Cernunnos,

"Try following a group of seniors as a single & see if you get waved through. "

Here we go again. I am getting rather tired of seeing this on this forum.
I am a very senior senior and most of my golf is played with the senior section. Perhaps we are the only group who are quite happy to let quicker players through or perhaps some people still have the 1960s attitude to people older than themselves. I have had problems with slow players ahead of me but rarely are they the older generation.

This guy wasn't so much in my 'line of sight' as blocking my back swing! Be nice to see the photo's though, I hope we get the opportunity. Also difficult to putt when there is a photographer crouching behind the hole. Bear in mind this wasn't just a laugh, we were trying to put a medal score together at the time.

I don't get the seiors bashing either. I have never found age or gender to be an issue with bad golf etiquet, just ignorant people, and informed people.

I know what you mean about the GM photographer. I'm sure he used stealth mode as one minute he wasn't there and the next he was right beside you clicking away. Its great that GM take the time to bring a photographer along as it really makes the day and the article when it comes out. You can also check every photo out in the gallery section so there may be stuff taken that amuses you or that you didn't see.

I think that if you're not easily distracted yourself (plane? what plane? *) then the, sometimes, antics of those that are can be highly amusing.

my mate must be the most hypersensitive person I've ever seen on a golf course - a class 1 club thrower, ball thrower, bag hurler. off it - you couldn't wake him with a bomb blast, pull a pint though and he's there!

* guy at the local airfield is a former(?) UK/European/World aerobatics champion - he has to practice somewhere, plus I think he teaches it

Cernunnos,

I can only go by what I've experienced. The ironic thing is the seniors I played with were great guys, but that was their attitude to the lone golfer on the course I was amember of last year. I'm not knocking all seniors. Infact the "Let them sit there" attitude seems to be prevelent & spreading amoungst all golfers, whether its a single or a group of 2, 3, or 4 players.

When we were on our yearly Links break last week, our 4 ball let through this 2 ball group, who'd caught up. We said they could come through. They then took 15 minutes to finish off on the green, leaving us waiting at the teebox bench for them to finish faffing about, before duffing their shots & held us up for the remainder of the round.

Different clubs seem to have different elements to them, where certain attitudes reign.

TWM, if you are a good & typical example of the seniors at your club, then I'd be more than happy to play there.

Would Bandit's fall under etiquette? I mean one guy at my local played off 19 or something for about 15 years!!! he won everything but once the complaints too there toll on the committee year after year they adjusted his hcp to something like 7, he left and joined another club playing off... yes you guessed it 19 again!!

Many of the basics are covered but often the wording of etiquete rules are as vague as the the rules of golf.

Common sense and manners are the way, as is thinking about what you would accept or not when you play can give you an idea.

If you wish to witness neglect of such course manners just study the average seniors comp and count the times you see them forget the divot and certainly pitch marks and how they rarely call 'FORE' when they hit a wayward one or lose sight of the ball off the tee.lol. I could list a host of negatives for you but just show consideration for others is the best advice.

Don't stand with your shadow cast over the line of someones putt.

I was playing with a mate of mine once...God he is a slow player, pacing out yardages, checking strokesavers etc.etc. Just get on with it man!!

He was stood over the ball on the second tee for what seemed like bloody ages (as usual) and then turned to me and said "Rob, could you please move back...your shadow is over the ball"
I duly stepped back with the comment "well it wasn't there when you first fecking addressed it"

:D :D :D

And gamesmanship?
A mate of mine I play with is a very good golfer, swing like a pro, and hits the ball bloody miles. Plays off 6. Whenever I have a game with him lined up, I will send a text to him just as he is leaving the house along the lines of "Hey Neil, have you still got that high cut?" That normally works ;) ;) ;)
