Im getting sick to death of this now. Yet again after a good start I collapsed on the back 9 holes. After 9 holes today I had a rather nice 27 points 40 gross!!!. I then proceed to only score 15 points over the next 9 52 gross leaving me with 42 points 92 gross with two 8's on the card. The issue was today was not my mind for a change but energy levels. By the 12th hole I just ran out of steam and my swing started to abandon me. I had a mars bar going up the 15th but this was too little too late. Heres the question, Can anyone recommmend anything to eat to keep energy levels up throughout the round(no bananas plz)?

Do you eat sufficiently pre round? If you don't do bananas, snickers, flapjacks, something like that...

Also keep you fluids up, you cant beat water...

Your swing abandoned you at the 12th and you still had 40pts..... and you want sympathy ;)

that's just golf I'm afraid.

but I dont eat breakfast as I tee off just after 7am

There is the problem... get up earlier and get some breakie in you before you start. Nothing to heavy, even some toast and marmalade would help.

I think that could be an underlying problem. And it was 42 points with 2 blobs btw lol.

I like ready to eat dried apricots for a snack on the go.
I have them in a little plastic sealable pot and have a couple every two or three holes

So off 28 you went out in +5 ?

Did you know your score at the turn?
Are you in shape, fitness wise?

Yep Bob went out in 40(+5). No I am not in shape. Took up golf to shift some of my bulk and it is gradually working. Did carry throughout the winter and actually felt better doing that and not as tired as I do when using my trolley in the summer. Yes I knew my score at the turn and played holes 10+11 bogey, par. I just lost all energy on my second shot on 12 after putting my drive down the middle, it felt like I was drained all of a sudden.

I don't often play early morning, but if I do, it's a bowl of porridge, easily made in the microwave ( I know.. not the proper way to do it ) and that should give a slow burning energy source for the morning ahead. I certainly wouldn't try to play on an empty stomach and have just a twix and a sugary drink to try and see me through. Neither of those will provide anything other than a sugar rush and you'll soon work through that very quickly.

Since you have an aversion to bananas then you need to find another on course energy source that is slow burning and lasts the course ( no pun intended) get that sorted out and your problem will be gone.

92 (42pts) is still well under your handicap, i had a 45 first 9 and 59 back in last weeks cancelled comp. I just played rubbish on the back 9.

Was it a qualifier? If it was, you should be happy, not worrying about blowing up - we all do that at some time.

Yep it was a qualifier. Dont know what Ive been cut too yet. Its just the repeat blowing up that annoys me. Without blowing my own trumpet but I shouldnt be on 28 handicap anymore. I regularly go out in mid 20 points and then fall apart around the middle part of the round which was down to my mind running away with me. I have recently had 36 points with 6 blobs and 37 points with 5 blobs all through me taking on silly shots going for the great score. Maybe I should be a 28 because of inconsistancies?.

After going out and starting with my head up my rear end I don't have much sympathy ;). One thing that wasn't a reason for bad play though was my energy levels. They remained quite good. Had a "fry" before going out. Pancakes, potatoe bread, done on a dry pan then fried egg, and 2 beef sausages (all done in fry lite), washed down with a coffee. Sugar free caffine beverage, water and a mars drink on the course with a few boxes of dried fruit (the type for kids lunch boxes) made sure I kept going. Haven't been trying and still lost weight over the last month just by being more active.

I know it's already been said but breakfast is the answer. Most important meal of the day. Basically, you are running on empty. I have porridge virtually every day. If you are really pushed for time a bowl of cereal only takes a few minutes to eat. Something like flapjacks are good to keep you going around the course as they are a slower release of energy compared to chocolate.

If you're a big lad and you had no breakfast, I'm not surprised you ran out of steam after 12 holes.
Having a wild guess, how does it feel to now be off 25 ?
Pretty rubbish probably if your other handicap is 20

15pts was the better of my 2 9's today

Is it possible the back 9 is just much harder than the front?

Although having read your post about going for it and thinking about a great score I think they are the prime suspects.

get up 10 minutes earlier and have a couple of slices of toast with chocolate spread (nutella), it's slow release energ food so should keep the levels up to the required amount.

Dont tee off until 0924 tomorrow for the second major of the year so have got plenty of time for breakfast. The back 9 is longer but it was a very strange 9. Ill go through it quickly.

Hole 10, hit a great 3 wood too well, didnt fade but stayed straight and went into the trees on the left slightly. Had to virtually chip out sideways. Hit a hybrid to 10ft off the green. Hit a very poor chip but 2 putted for a 6 for 2 points

Hole 11, 158 yards straight over the lake, stopped a 6 iron almost dead pin high, lipped out the putt. Tapped in 3 for 3.

Hole 12, Dog leg left. Hit a lovely 3 wood straight down the middle to the bend. This is where it all went wrong. Tried to hit a 7 iron to finish short of the lake on the right but the swing just felt wooly and caught it fat and went 40 yard or so. Repeat for 3rd shot. Fourth shot very similar into the lake. Ended up with an 8.

Hole 13, 208 yard par 3. Hit a 3 wood and ended up fading it up the hill on the right. Felt I was getting tired as I started to fade the ball which happens when Im tired. Awful chip thinned to the back of the green. Good two putt 4 for 3

Hole 14, Hit another 3 wood, again fading it into the rough. Proceeded to fat 2 8 irons with one going into the ditch. Walked off with an 8 again.

Hole 15. Got the big dog out felt like a good swing and hit the ground 8 inches behind the ball!. Somehow got down for a 7 after chip out the bunker, two good hybrids, a very dodgy chip and a good two putt. 7 for 1.

Hole 16. Disgusting tee shot with my 3 wood. Slapped at the ball and sliced it horrribly to the right into the rough. Two decent irons got me to the green where I 3 putted. 6 for 2.

Hole 17. Par 3, 6 iron off the tee fatted 80 yards into the thick rough. Hit a brilliant gap wedge to 10 foot and 2 putted. 4 for 2

Hole 18, Ok 3 wood to the 1st cut. Hybrid well struck but straight into the bunker. Started to loose focus and thinned a wedge through the green. Did the same back but a decent two putt. 6 for 1.
