• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Do you play in the rain?

Heavy rain - only when I have to (summer team comps), or if it is a board competition and I think I have a chance to win it.

Medium/light rain - if I am in a group I like then I'll get the waterproofs and rain gloves ready.

I stopped playing BB winter league when covid struck at the same time as my partner quit golf, and haven't had the urge to return after that.

I have no need to play winter golf because of not letting your team down any more, and am pretty happy with my decision because of the terrible weather over the last few years.

I can just rock up at the course and play a few holes when the weather is nice and then have a few beers with the regulars.

If it’s raining before I go out, no I don’t play.

If I’m out on the course and it’s starts there’s a number of factors that come into play.

  1. Do my playing partners want to stay out? If they do, irrespective of my score, I’ll stay out.
  2. Equally, if I have a stellar score, I’d hope someone would stay out to record the score. If they don’t, I’d be disappointed but accept their decision.
  3. If it’s torrential, inc. the greens/course showing standing water, I’d want to go in.
  4. If there’s lightning, I’m off.
Whatever, it’s no big thing. There’s always next time…

That sums up my view, now retired there is always tomorrow.

If its lashing it down before we start then, unless I've travelled far, I wont play.

if its merely a bit of light rain then no problem, I'll trust the brolly and the waterproofs and get on out there.

If it lashes down halfway round...well...you're already out there so you might as well continue...especially as at our place where each hole until the 8th takes you further away from the clubhouse and its only when you get halfway up the 13th that you see the clubhouse again....and if you've played 13...you might as well finish the last 5 holes.

Was due to play today in the winter league. Got a message from one of the guys in the pair we'd booked on with to say one of 'em was ill - so were withdrawing. Given it's been chucking it down for about 2 hours it was a good call.

I'll play in the rain if it's not freezing but it's 6 degrees here in Yorkshire today - and I don't want to be out there in that.

If it's going to be biblical then no. If it's just regular rain, then waterproofs on and I'm out.

I'm not sure you can live in the north of England and be precious about playing in the rain.
This.

It's my regular response whenever someone says"you're not going out in that are you".

We tried playing while it was snowing once, impossible. The snow gathers on your ball while putting and if it gets too deep you can't find it either.

When I was in the UK I played in some awful conditions, snow yes twice, hail sleet and freezing rain, I look back and don't know how I did it.....

But then I remember if I didn't play I would be having a long break before Spring came, always looked forward to a pint in front of a fire in the clubhouse.
