• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Do you care about how you look on the course?

So where do you draw the line then chaps?

If you are not especially good at your job, should you have to wear plain or understated clothes/suits?
Not great at football, but really love playing the game, should you stich to some plain black Umbro boots, instead of the nice new Nike's?
Should less than stellar cyclists stick to a cheapish bike, and basic equipment?

The logic on display by some makes no sense. If colourful attire is not for you, fair enough. But why on earth do you seem to think that people should only wear the stuff if they are good players? And why would you then judge someone who isn't a great golfer for wearing it?

Why do you have to draw a line? The dress code is there, as long as you're within it, wear what you want and don't worry about everyone else

100 posts about what to wear whilst playing golf,it's a crazy world.
Just wear what you like as long as the club your playing deems it appropriate.

To be honest, with the way I hack it round the course most of the time if someone told me that wearing lipstick and eyeliner would allow me to shoot below my handicap I'd give it a go.

I've recently started to wear eyeliner every day but then, I am a woman.
Too early to tell if it's helping the golf or not.

If you do decide to wear make up for golf, make sure your mascara is waterproof!

Business socks?? :) :):) That's a new one on me. And well done to the club for managing to invent yet another sub genre of clothes you can't wear, well done. No business socks!! Really? Is it humanly possibly to be offended by someone wearing 'business socks'? Whatever the hell they are. Are they the type Peter Jones wears on Dragons Den as he's a businessman?

I'm playing a nice course tomorrow that has hosted some senior tournaments on a company golf day, and I looked on the web site for the dress code regarding shorts and socks, what with it being hot. And guess what, it doesn't have one. Well not one I could find anyway. How very refreshing I thought. I can't wait to see if the course is full of hooded youths in combat shorts and flip flops, or people dressed as most golfers do in the hot weather. Place your bets now.

If you're a fan of Flight of the Conchords, you'll know that Business Socks are something else entirely... ;)

I wear what I find comfortable, in all walks of life. Where there's a dress code, I comply with it. If anyone's life is so empty that my choice of clothing bothers them, then that's their problem, IMO.

My old man is a bit of a stickler, though, and always looks smart. However, we were playing last night and his shirt became untucked on the 13th. I refused to carry on until he sorted himself out.

So don't dress 'golfer' - try and dress tidy. I have to wear white socks with shorts and I cannot wear 'sports' type shoes (so it's 'normal' shoes) at my club - probably the case for any traditional members club. My wife detests this look and thinks it looks awful. I'm never allowed to dress like that normally - she would almost refuse to be seen out with me and would keep her distance if we had to go into town.

As a wife, I dread the summer season when Mr Mimms sets for the club wearing his nicely tailored shorts, white mid length socks and a pair of black brogues!:o
