• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Do you care about how you look on the course?

I try to look presentable but nothing over the top as im not that fussed. Im more bothered about how my scorecard looks than how I do :D

Well, back in the 1950's to 1980's if club golfers wore flash clothes you really had to be a good player. A poor player wearing flash clothes was taken to be a fool.
Around the time of 'Loadsamoney' that got completely turned on it's head. The good players were distinguished by their sober dressing. Still tends to apply today. At my club anyway.

But they are just clothes. To judge someone on what they wear is beyond ignorant. Why should anyone face any kind of judgement for the clothes they are wearing because they aren't good players?

In any other sport you wear what you think is suitable, comfortable and to your individual taste. I've never looked at anyone dressed in bright/flashy clothes and thought anything about his or her ability.

Don't see any difference between golf course and anywhere else in general. I don't walk the streets or go to work dressing like a scruffy tramp, so don't see reason to dress like a div on the course either.

Plus, golf gives you an excuse to dress like a pimp and get away with it.

Is the perception not 'If I dress lake Ricki Fowler people will think that I can play like Ricki Fowler'
Or is that just too simple.

Simple question.
If a guy was dressed like Ricki on the range, dreadful swing and grip and he kept missing the ball and hitting the boards, what would your honest immediate thoughts be?

well put, all round.

there are those who wouldn't be seen dead at a night out wearing last years clothes, and carry this over to everything they do - there are those who are only in style because what they are wearing is 20 years old - and there's everything in between.

then overlay new -> clean and pressed -> clean -> don't care and you have the full matrix of clothing (which applies as much to work, night clubs, sports and everyday living.

yea of course i care , not overly fussed re brands etc , clean & smart will do , there is no excuse to be scruffy now a days, loadsa places do cut price trousers & t shirts , over here you could get new ones for about €15.. even 3 wears out of them = €5 a round .. if your reason for not having them is cost then maybe ya shouldnt be playing ..

I don't think anyone that dresses like Rickie Fowler thinks that at all. I just think they like the stuff he wears and want to dress like that too.

My immediate thoughts would be that he is just a beginner.

Edit; to add to that slightly, a beginner that is enthusiastic about the game as they have obviously spent decent money on some kit.

I'm not sure I understand this "you shouldn't wear X" unless you are of certain ability. I have a whole load of golf clothes, probably more than I have normal clothes. They range from plain to moderately loud, from collared to collarless. I have jumpers, tank tops and even a cardigan but I'm not sure what any of that has to do with my h'cap or what it has to do with anyone else.

I like the fact golf has a dress code, I like the fact that the dress code has a broad range styles that fit within it and I like the fact that people can interpret that and wear what they want and spend what they want. For me personally, golf is my hobby and that it what I like to spend my money on - it's my choice.

wore my shirt out of the trousers for the first time ever last night!!! :o My playing partners were astonished!! I swore I would never do it as like to look smart and well dressed on the gc..... it was v hot and just seemed more practical and cooler to do so.... felt wrong though... and again I seem to be rebelling against authority as I was perfectly well prepared to argue my case vehmently should any one question my attire!!! Not sure why tbh.... I love decent expensive clothes ( Im a Boss man...) I think that after seeing so many youngsters and standards slipping over the years if you cant beat them ....... I think I need counselling:(...

I wouldn't think anything less or more of them either as a person or their golf ability.

I would definitely be thinking "if I hit it that bad then I
wouldn't want to draw attention to myself with the wacky clobber!!"

My shoes will be clean and trousers pressed even if I'm waking the dog.

I like to look clean and presentable at all times.

Exactly. Anybody thinking less of a person because of something so trivial is a bit harsh.

People who dress wacky and play crap only get laughed upon imo because they have made more of an effort with the clobber than the game :D

Just need to rethink their priorities

How many times when you're at the course/club do you check your phone at the end of the round to find a text message from 'er in doors "can you pick up some milk on your way home?" if you're anything like me it's a fairly regular occurrence. You think these people look 'silly' on the golf course imagine how silly they must feel/look in the queue at Tesco Express!

WHAT!!!!! I was not sure how the End of Days would be signalled, but I think I know now. I tells you, this is just the tip of the iceberg and as sure as night follows day this will inevitably lead to total anarchy where the very fabric of our society will crumble. I think that's what some golf clubs think isn't it?

Stay strong sir, stay strong...

So don't dress 'golfer' - try and dress tidy. I have to wear white socks with shorts and I cannot wear 'sports' type shoes (so it's 'normal' shoes) at my club - probably the case for any traditional members club. My wife detests this look and thinks it looks awful. I'm never allowed to dress like that normally - she would almost refuse to be seen out with me and would keep her distance if we had to go into town.

So shorts, white socks pulled up no doubt and normal shoes? I'm with your wife, Jeez, even Germans would say that's look is not good ;)
