Do Golfers Really Care About Sustainability?

Course wise the bigger clubs do, Nairn Dunbar won awards two or 3 years running for their efforts, but that Greenkeeper was poached by Royal Aberdeen. Nairn made a lot of effort but they could afford to like Dornoch are two rich clubs.

im not sure many of the members of clubs pay that much attention especially the amount of litter, mainly bottles and cans chucked in bushes in the summer

What always disappoints me, how naive, is that why doesn't the op engage on the subject? That way people might visit his blog of their own volition. By simply giving up it tends to show they were not that bothered in the first place. Not just this poster, it happens quite often.
TBH, theres been a number of new joiners/posters who drop a contentious thread then disappear lately. All it takes is a small introduction or interaction with other threads first before posting their contentious thread. It's less likely to annoy or even win people over to you first.

I still find this silly. Plastic tees can be reused until the cows come home. I last bought pink castle tees about six years ago, I find more than I lose. We're on teeing mats like most places - behind our 4th tee is a slope with long grass on it - I went looking for my tee there on Sunday and found about six other pink castle tees lying there, so in my bag they went. If I had to buy tees again maybe I would get bamboo ones or whatever, but the chances are I'll never need to! And I'm not sure how a club polices what tees you're using.

Why would you buy pink castle tees? They are lying around everywhere.

I've never bought a tee in my life, I use plain white wooden tees and find more than I break / use. I'm very sustainable me :)

I said it was six years ago! Was before I realised that people leave them lying everywhere. Some of those ones I bought are still in the packet in a drawer at home. 😂

I've just cleared out my trolley bag ahead of a trip to West Wales tomorrow. There were hundreds of tees in there, I've never bought any either. I'm sure when visiting a course that hands them out, you always grab a handful! Taken most out and put in a bag in the garage.

Back a the thread, if you can demonstrate real economic value, sustainable practices just make sense!

I’ve thought this many times:

1) shoes! Moulded spikeless have a short shelf life, shoes with changeable spikes are far more sustainable.

2) balls, the biggest non sustainable item a golfer uses. I’ve posted this before, why can’t there be a ball disposal bin at clubs where scruffers are taken away for eco friendly disposal or recycling. Junking it into a pond/bush etc isn’t the answer.

I can count on one hand the number of plastic castle tees I've ever broken - whereas wooden ones break constantly.

If golf shops stop selling the plastic ones then they will be phased out eventually, no doubt. But it will take a long, long time due to how reusable they are, that's all I'm saying. I'm not going to chuck 50 perfectly good tees in the bin so I can spend money buying wooden or bamboo ones instead.

I do get that. It’s logical. But I see plastic tees all the time littered across tee boxes. Don’t know why people dump them. Maybe they have a bad shot and don’t want them anymore or just don’t see where they go.

I only use wooden ones personally. I actually only ever buy the long ones for driving because I just pick up the broken ones and use those for irons.

I think you underestimate how blind some people are. Especially if you're colourblind you can't always see pink on green. Even takes me a few minutes to see my tee sometimes when it's right under my feet. And using mats, the tees fly out in all directions, you need one spotter for your ball and one for your tee.

It also might relate to the number of people who are red/green colour blind.

In reply to the original question, yes of course they do.

You just need to look at the Holidays in 2025 thread on this forum full of golfers to see how much they have drastically cut down on short and long haul plane journeys.
