• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Do you care about how you look on the course?

So don't dress 'golfer' - try and dress tidy. I have to wear white socks with shorts and I cannot wear 'sports' type shoes (so it's 'normal' shoes) at my club - probably the case for any traditional members club. My wife detests this look and thinks it looks awful. I'm never allowed to dress like that normally - she would almost refuse to be seen out with me and would keep her distance if we had to go into town.

Quite right, what sort of idiot would consider wearing sports type shoes to participate in a sport? :)

I actually find it quite funny the way clubs make themselves sound slightly ridiculous in their dress code wordings at times. MikeH invited a forumer to a round at his course earlier in the week, being nosy I had a look at the website. Not to decry Mike's club, I'm sure it is a very nice place to be and full of wonderful members; however, the dress code forbade the wearing of 'business' socks with shorts, business socks! :D

I can't find my clubs dress code. It isn't on our website and it's not in my fixture diary/ rule book. Despite this everyone from members to visitors seem to dress appropriately. You would think it would be looking like the set of Mad Max 2 by now.

I must admit to do own nothing but puma polo shirts. First off they fit nicely and they are comfortable to wear. Secondly they wash and wear well. I did go through a time of buying primark plain polo shirts, these started to bobble and fade after a few wears and washes. Granted they are £10 a pop compaired to £30 +

Its my choice I guess but I don't drink a lot and my only vices in life are polo shirts, golf clubs and cars.

Mine are all Blue Harbour from M&S as HID buys most of my clothes.

My one BIG dislike clothes-wise are stupid, garish, patterned 'comedy' golf trousers and shirts. I just don't find them funny and I find them a little bit taking the p**s out of our dress code.

Business socks?? :) :):) That's a new one on me. And well done to the club for managing to invent yet another sub genre of clothes you can't wear, well done. No business socks!! Really? Is it humanly possibly to be offended by someone wearing 'business socks'? Whatever the hell they are. Are they the type Peter Jones wears on Dragons Den as he's a businessman?

I'm playing a nice course tomorrow that has hosted some senior tournaments on a company golf day, and I looked on the web site for the dress code regarding shorts and socks, what with it being hot. And guess what, it doesn't have one. Well not one I could find anyway. How very refreshing I thought. I can't wait to see if the course is full of hooded youths in combat shorts and flip flops, or people dressed as most golfers do in the hot weather. Place your bets now.

I've never been fashionable or even fashion conscious and at 35 it's a bit late to start now. For me it's more important to feel comfortable and that means that I see myself as smart and presentable before I leave the house.
Plain trousers (mainly dark colours but have a white pair) and a polo shirt, a base layer if required, is all I think it takes to be dressed for golf.

I don't care what others think, just what I think myself.

Now we're back to Hawkeye's point about what looks silly.

I say wear whatever you want as long as it fits in with the dress code. If you want to wear orange trousers, a pink shirt and a fluorescent yellow hat then you go for it and I hope you enjoy yourself. Didn't realise we had the fashion police here to make sure no-one is breaking any sartorial rules.

"All the gear, no idea".

Reminds me of 20 years ago when you HAD to be class at football to even contemplate wearing white football boots. I feel it's the same today if you want to wear tartan trousers to the golf :D

So where do you draw the line then chaps?

If you are not especially good at your job, should you have to wear plain or understated clothes/suits?
Not great at football, but really love playing the game, should you stich to some plain black Umbro boots, instead of the nice new Nike's?
Should less than stellar cyclists stick to a cheapish bike, and basic equipment?

The logic on display by some makes no sense. If colourful attire is not for you, fair enough. But why on earth do you seem to think that people should only wear the stuff if they are good players? And why would you then judge someone who isn't a great golfer for wearing it?

I have blue harbour polo necks for winter which HID buys me for golf, she's upped her game to Hugo Boss recently, or the fancy mans paying half to get me out .

Maybe it's to do with looking like a pro but playing far from it? Maybe it's to do with mis-spent time and money?

I saw a guy decked out head to toe in Adidas gear...taylormade bag and clubs, playing like a total diddy. I think it was the expectation that this guy was a player that made it funny. It's difficult not to judge in this case.

Btw I dress exactly like a 12 handicapper. Got a white belt in the cupboard for when I get to single figures :D
