Do nice guys win?

It sounded very much a pro Rory crowd which I was surprised about as there was mention of BDC being the man of the people

When BDC hit a great shot he was cheered, same with Rosey. Rory has a positive following indeed which was great to see. But it wasn’t pro Rory and anti-everyone else. I thought it was great that the crowd enjoyed great golf from everyone and didn’t have some kind of you vs them mentality.

Of course, he recently lost a battle with Bryson in a major, so I imagine he just wanted to block him out completely and forget about who he was playing against so he wasn't susceptible to any minds games. Makes sense, and it worked.
It was also very clear that Bryson was intending to bring the noise of the crowd if he stayed contention so he probably came with the attitude of block everything out no matter what happens.

I find the whole premise wild, it's just 2 people with different personalities doing their job.

Imagine at work you had a a really important, stressful task, with a tight deadline, requiring your full concentration. The way you respond to people during that time may not reflect your usual self. It would be crazy if someone got a glimpse of that and judged your whole personality from it. You can be the nicest person in the world, but under these circumstances you may not fancy idle chat with someone, whether you liked them or not.

I can see the headlines now... "Guy At Work Not Universally Liked - World Shocked!

Personally, I don't give a rats ass if anyone I work with likes me or has a voodoo doll of me. I'm not there to make friends, I'm there to make clients profitable.

Faldo was and is absolutely correct that bryson needs to play with a bit more finesse around agusta.
Beating bags of balls and having the hooks was never going to get it done.
Faldo has 3 green jackets. The fella knows how to get it done.
The amount of stick he seems to get baffles me. He has a dream major collection.
3 time winner around agusta. Of course he is going to talk constantly about how he did it and what the guys should be doing.
It's one thing to offer insight. It's another thing to acknowledge that people don't like you talking about yourself, then proceed to do it for so long that you forget your original point, as he did after the round

Gary Player turns 90 this year.
Give the guy a break.
He's still walking and talking, he knows what day it is and where he is - well done him. I hope I'm in such good shape at 90.
They could stop sticking a microphone in his face. That's their fault, not his.

The most exciting final 9 of the Masters that I remember was 1978. If Rose had won this year, it would have been very similar.

Well, the purpose of this thread is blindingly obvious. Clearly nothing to do with asking if nice guys can win, as you can look down the history of major winners and select many Champions that most would happily agree were "nice guys".

Rather, this thread was used as a platform for people to slag off McIlroy, and create a debate with those that are McIlroy fans. I've not ready anything beyond the OP, but I bet that is roughly how this thread has gone so far?

I present Darren Clarke as exhibit A. Lost a wife and won the Open

You're right, it has turned into a McIlroy love/hate thread and unfortunately that wasn't the intention. McIlroy (recently), Woods, Faldo etc have all won Majors by being single minded but I was looking for examples of nice guys chatting their way round to victory as well. Maybe Ben Crenshaw, Darren Clarke, Arnie, Els were examples, I'm not sure. I just asked the question. Can you win majors being 'nice'?

Surely that just depends on whether you're more biased towards introversion or extroversion?
Some people will feel more energised or relaxed and gain performance through engaging with others, whilst some will gain this through detaching and remaining disconnected.

In sports where there are bursts of action and then relatively long gaps between them everyone deals with the gaps in their own way.

It's whether you can be single minded enough to win multiple majors - nice guys can definitely win, as you have mentioned above, so the real question is, can you be utterly single minded and still be nice?

I guess that comes into the definition of nice. Selfish definitely, they have to be selfish. That might not make them great in their private lives.

Good supplementary question 👍

From everything I've seen of Danny Willett, I'd guess it's unlikely he kept his mouth shut all the round when he won the Masters. 😄

Out of curiosity, what's the definition of "nice" used here?

In the context of competition stroke play golf, what would be examples of someone being nice, and someone not being nice?
