Earlier this week I received a text message from DeVeere Oulton Hall regarding special offer golf membership.
Obviously read the text with interest but discounted it as I am happy at my club and Oulton Hall is just too far away.

This morning I receive a letter from Oulton Hall offering me a cheap membership with similar blurb. Again, I read the letter then threw it in the bin.

Imagine my astonishment when just 5 minutes ago I received yet another text message from Oulton Hall offering me cheap membership....... They're persistent, I'll give them that!

As part of the prestigious DeVeere group, are they feeling the pinch?
Seems to me they are canvassing heavily for membership in these times of austerity. Thing is, there's no way I would join as I live around 20 miles from the course. Not so good for an after work knock is it?

Anybody else been canvassed to join what would appear to be a struggling golf club?

Sign up at my club at the weekend offering 16 months membership for the price of 12. Never seen the club have to resort to such offers so things may be getting worse membership wise.

I enquired about a few clubs when I was looking to move out of area about 6 months ago and am getting calls, texts and emails from all of them chasing me up and making offers as well.

Who's chasing you and what are they offering? Jan's looking for a new club next year

Not sure that it will be much help as i was looking to move over to the West Midlands so all of the clubs are out that way.

As I mentioned though, Stoke are offering 16 months for the price of 12.

Oic
As I mentioned though, Stoke are offering 16 months for the price of 12.

But they still want £500 joining fee

I know, none of the clubs near me are looking like dropping joining fees. Part of what is putting me off Belton Park is paying another joining fee.

They do let you pay it over 10 years at Stoke though (I opted to split it over 4) and at interview they confirmed to me that I would not be expected to pay the remainder if I left before I had paid it all.

Basher, is this the 100 points for £295?

That's the one Bob. I don't think it's a straight forward club membership reading the letter though. It does state you can play several other courses too.

Possibly good for someone looking to join or play occasionally perhaps?

I think I'll be moving clubs once my membership runs out. Ive never really been made to feel that welcome by the other members. :D

Hopefully I'll be able to get a decent deal around here.

There business development manager needs a talking to. Its a must to send there texts and letters but never at the same time to the same database. Thats bad work on someones part.

This is a new class of membership De Vere are now rolling out.
3 months ago, you could have joined as a normal member. No joining fee and I think around £50 per month. This gives you unlimited golf plus a total of 20 free rounds at any of the De Vere course throughout the UK.
Now...
You buy 100 points for £295 which would last a keen golf about 3-4 months
The more you play, the more points you use.
So for someone who plays a lot of golf they would naturally pick the £50 per month unlimited golf?
Wrong.
The only option available to new members is the points scheme, basically doubling the cost of membership for keen golfers.
Jan wasn't happy

Aha!!!

So, it's basically pay your money and don't play much golf. Alternatively, pay your money, play your golf, then pay more money to carry on playing?

That's terrible!

To the speed reader who lives local, they may think it's not a bad deal then?

Given your explanation Bob, I'd say it's a bit of a rum deal. Glad I'm staying put at my own club.
The bacon sarnies are a bloody rip off at Oulton anyway!!! :D
