Earlier today i was a bit nosey and clicked on the Latest Golf Deals add for the Apple Watch Series 3, on the right hand side of the page .
An hour later i received a text message from them offering me the very same Apple Watch.
TBH i feel a bit uneasy, it's as if i'm being spied on.

Does this happen to everyone, and how do you feel about this , also your telephone number being passed around. ??

Every click you do on the internet is monitored and stored and has been for a bit now. For instance if you use Amazon then they probably know more about your shopping habits then you do. This is currently mostly used to tailor adverts to your browsing history, who knows what it will be used for in the future.

GM are by no means unique about doing this, loads of other web sites do it. If you are concerned about your privacy then basically do not use the internet. Or at the very least use a browser that masks most of what you do. Welcome to the 21st century.

Who gave them permission to share my phone number ?

It's likely not even GM who is sharing your number. You get served an advert who is connected to you in any way (check out retargeting), maybe you bought something through a lightly related company to them. Doesn't even need to be golf related. If you click on that ad the company knows it, an then they know you are a hot prospect. GM isn't involved.

As soon as you put your phone number into any web site then you are fair game. I suspect it is very difficult to trace it to one web site. If you are concerned then just put in a fake phone number unless they are convinced the web site really needs a proper one, and have a email address you can use that can be verified, but is just for spam which you will inevitably get when yo put your email address into most web sites.

I have adblocker, i don't get pop up ads across the page, but these ads are always on the right hand side of the screen.

More websites do that now. They just look at your browsing history and then put up an advert in their page for similar or not the same items.

I've heard the phrase data mining before. They pick up all of your clicks and make connections, very scary.

At some point you will have filled in a form, entered an online competition and now your number has been hawked around the web. Once it's out there bots will pick it up, grab it and use it for their own purposes.

Very hard to stay "off grid" now.

If I answered all the e-mails I receive offering to make my nob bigger, I could putt with it.
