Declaring a ball lost?

Exactly.
If I hit a shocker into the rubbish, I can declare "that ball is lost and this next ball is not a provisional"

100% agree.............my beef is with someone who is in the same situation hits a great PROV BALL then becuse it's that good will not bother looking for the first one. In competition, I have never seen this happen.

In my mind it gives you an extra choice....stand on the tee after a bad shot, say it's a provisional when really you want a good one to forget the first one. If it's crap, look for the first one.

It's in the Rules, so legit. Get over it!

It has after all cost, effectively, 2 shots to get to that position!

Certainly my attitude - and I've seen a provisional canned! I took my time walking to the green so he could pick it out of the hole before I found his!

You cant have a beef with it as it's perfectly within the rules. The rules give and the rules take away!

I have not only seen the scenario but have done it on many an occasion, it isn't cheating as the penalties apply.

On a slight tangent if I hit my tee shot a long way but it may be lost so I play a provisional and top it 50 yards am I allowed to play another provisional shot with the 2nd ball or do I have to walk 250 yards further (yes that's right im claiming a 300 yard drive) to look for the original otherwise my provisional is now in play when I hit it again?

You can hit the Provisional as many times as you need as long as its behind where the original 1st ball is, I believe.

Almost. If the original is found and you continue to play the provisional (although it is still further away), you will be playing a wrong ball.
When found, the original is the ball in play and the provisional loses its status as 'provisionally the ball in play'.

I can have a beef with it.............thats allowed, it's a forum. I have a beef with going in a divot or in a footprint thats not been raked. I have to play it, but dont tell me I can't have a beef with it.

Cheating..........who said that.

Sorry! of course you can have a beef about it ................... irrelevant though in the context of a rules forum!

Cheating? .......... no one said it, I just pointed out that because it's not against the rules then it's ok!

And if it lands in the same area as the first ball and you find the first but not the second it's back to the tee to play a third ball.

If you went in to the cabbage again 3 off the tee, your 3rd ball (potentially 5 off the tee) should be declared a provisional to protect you from the walk of shame ;)

Playing devils advocate here.

If your 1st tee shot goes into the cabbage and from what I have read, you cannot "declare" a ball lost and as such your playing partners have the right to look for it, isn't then not declaring a provisional ball and then playing "3 off the tee", although taking the risk of where that drive may go, but, all the same putting that ball then in play immediately, isn't that a form of declaring the 1st ball as lost and as such removing the right of the opposition to look for it?

Isn't this a way around that rule although there is a slight risk with that 2nd drive?

You can't declare a ball lost. It is "deemed" lost in certain situations i.e. after a 5 minute search or reloading without calling provisional etc.
