Right so your playing a par 4 and you have 190 to go. Its all downhill, not steep but noticeable and the fairways and greens are fast.
What do you do?
go for the green, hope it sticks and see what happens?
play short and then wedge in?

If you go short then you have a fairly downhill chip shot, would it be better to go long perhaps and then chip uphill from off the back of the green?

Curious for thoughts?

I am afraid you haven't painted a clear picture - and as presented I don't see any course management issues.

Why wouldn't you just knock it down towards the green and, if it runs through, you are in no worse a position than having elected to play long?

What possible reason is there to deliberately play short?

use my hybrid get it in the air and it should stop. make sure its a soft ball and there you go, sounds like a nice par for, we have the same sounding hole which is a par 3

I'm with the DuncMeister on this one. Downhill fast greens and fairway I'm hitting it 160 and letting the course conditions get me on the putting surface :)

:)

the most likely 'course management' issue would be whether to hit an easy, lower trajectory, shot or try and fire it all the way - but without a better understanding of the conditions it's hard to read this into the question. the lower trajectory shot will tend to respond more consistently on landing if things are firm, but 'hope it sticks' could be conditions or player!

definitely sounds like one of those where the least risk will be significantly player/capability orientated

If you are in the middle of the fairway with no trouble in front of you and you can hit a club 190 then there is no reason not to go for it.

With no hazards short then I'd choose something to land short and run out. Of course there is the chance of a bad bounce but thats golf and you're no worse off than laying up or going for it and being too agressive and out the back

190y... My gap wedge...
if too downhill then just putt it...

Totally depending on how steep the slope is, but I'd be looking to either my 4 (170-180 yards) or 5 iron (160-170 yards) to hit it down the hill and on. If it really wasn't that steep I may consider an slow 5 wood, which I normally hit 190 - 200

Definitely some missing information here! If there's nothing but grass between the 2nd shot and the green there's no way I'm laying up (intentionally)

If there's a bunker in front I'd stick with "going for it" if its water in front I'd probably air on the side of caution and play for the back of the green!

Assuming 190 is to the middle?
Given fast hard conditions, so I'm looking to fly it 180 ish so it doesn't roll through, and if I'm a little short then it still has a chance to roll on because of the slope.
Depends how much elevation change between me and the green, I'm most likely hitting a full 6iron to try to pitch front of the green, could be a club either way depending on wind and slope.

I'm not too sure why this is a difficult course management decision? Sounds like a pretty standard shot.

Attack, attack, attack!!! I fed up trying to play safe I always mess it up! Downhill 190 no wind? Simple punch with a 6/7 Iron, pitch it short of the green and let the baby roll right up there and take it down :fore:!! Commitment and confidence, dont think to much!!
