Club Pros and Assistants in club competitions

I think for a PGA Assistant to have a chance of winning money they would need to be playing 4-5 times a week around their shop and coaching hours. The majority have a life outside golf and don't view comps as a good use of time. I think Trainees focus more on golf as they don't tend to get as much coaching work and have to enter a certain amount of comps a year.

As for entering club comps....I know some allow it but it depends on how much power the Head Pro weilds, what type of club it is and how much chance the pros would have of actually winning. Personally think it's bad idea.

I think there can be a differentiation between “free membership” and course “playing rights”. Certain staff could have playing rights without having full membership “rights”.

Our assistants are going to have plenty of work as our Head Pro is dropping a lot of his member teaching/coaching as his time working with Lottie Woad has now increased significantly. The assistants would be daft to waste their time playing in club comps when there is pretty good money to be made from coaching.

Though I note in passing that our ex-Head Pro (now Assistant Club Manager) is playing in the annual Am-Am this Thursday that our big Thursday Roll-up has and that is followed by a dinner. Interesting that his HI is 1.4 and we no longer think of him as a club pro.

Maybe he's relinquished his Pro status, I know several lads that have done this and moved away from being PGA affiliated and now just play as AM's for fun,

When it comes to staff who are not members (many are where I play) the question of staff playing on the course came up many years ago when I was still on committee and was answered by a simple point - surely the green staff would have a better understanding of the course if they actually played it.

When it comes to the average Pro shop pro playing comps based upon my experience of playing with quite a few in regional pro/ams I would have no objection to them playing in club comps. Most of them were just the equivalent of a mid to low single figure handicap player.

Do clubs still offer courtesy rounds to visiting PGA / BIGGA members and Golf Secretaries members.
I remember having a fair old row with a visiting [unannounced ] golf club secretary who expected a free round and did not get it.
Back in the old days mind.

Several clubs in Fife do not offer courtesy to PGA professionals.
I don’t believe Archerfield or Renaissance do either. They do have a lot of PGA professionals as full fee paying members though.
