I can honestly say nobody quoted their exact under the old system. We had two handicaps: exact & playing.
One of my friends who had drifted up from lowish single figures refused to say 10 when he got there - he would insist on 9.5, 9.6 etc. Obviously he took some ribbing for that.I can honestly say nobody quoted their exact under the old system.
I was both (but officially Chair) for about 10 years. Although I had a very able helper who did all the publication and clerical chores. In addition the committee was another experienced member plus the knowledgeable pro to sit in on the annual and ad hoc reviewsJust a little question, and not nesessarilly (can we have spell check?) off topic, but is the Competition Secretary the Handicap Secretary as well? I am a bit worried now, although, no one has got back to me yet.

Why would they do it completely randomly rather than to give different groups options? So, I become competition secretary at a Club. In my first day, I tell all members:
"Hi guys, I know that you all have different opinions on what handicaps are considered fair, as you don't all agree with WHS. I'm prepared to accept you all have a point, and your opinion is equally valid as the people that actually are employed by WHS and have many years experience in the field. As a result, I am going to randomly use different Allowances in all the club competitions. Sure, of the 50 competitions we run this year, you will all be unhappy in around 40 of them because you don't agree with the Allowance used that day. But for 5-10 competitions, you should be happy then"
Worst competition secretary ever.
You've read Nineteen Eighty Four too many timesWhy would they do it completely randomly rather than to give different groups options?
The current
folk who run the handicapping system don't even have the integrity to release the results of the survey they commissioned
They give the appearance of gutless apartchicks captured by groupthink.
They don't explain anywhere the benefits and drawbacks of the different allowances they impose it.
It is an attitude redolent of patrician entitlement.

I’ll state my PH off the back tees - PH is what I use in strokeplay and that’s what I consider the equivalent to the old way. Handicap for strokeplay off back tees at my club course. So when you say PH do you say which tee set as well?
Would I have to say 9 or 8 or 7 or 5 or 2 instead of 6 which is my HI? - doesn’t seem that simple for a non golfer.
So I would have to say 9 as that is what I get off our 65 tees, although my index is 6. If I was a member if Woodhall Spa, I no longer play off single figures.I’ll state my PH off the back tees - PH is what I use in strokeplay and that’s what I consider the equivalent to the old way. Indeed. They are two different roles.
I think my HI of 5.7 makes me sound better than I feel I am…most certainly saying 5 as I am off our Purple tees does. My strokeplay PH of 7 off back tees feels about right for me, and as it happens my CH for the same tees is also 7. I guess this is as much to do with how I want to ‘present’ myself as a golfer. I just don’t feel like a 5 handicap golfer. So I would have to say 9 as that is what I get off our 65 tees, although my index is 6. Seems a bit strange to have one’s ability stated (most people know the lower the better) just due to the difficulty of the course you play at.
I agree that they are different roles, however in my experience they are usually combined in some form. I am struggling to think of a club when there is someone whose sole role is Handicapping with no involvement in competitions. They are two different roles.
It's not uncommon for people to do both jobs, or for there to be a single match/competition & handicap committee.
So if you moved to Woodhall Spa you would 'present yourself' as a 10 handicapper?I think my HI of 5.7 makes me sound better than I feel I am…most certainly saying 5 as I am off our Purple tees does. With the best will in the world you are not a '5 handicap golfer', you are either a 5.7 but if you want to round this to the nearest whole number you are a 6 handicap golfer.I think my HI of 5.7 makes me sound better than I feel I am…most certainly saying 5 as I am off our Purple tees does. Conversely, and just to show that anecdotal 'evidence' isn't really evidence at all. I've been a member of four clubs and they have all had separate Comp Sec and Handicap Sec.I agree that they are different roles, however in my experience they are usually combined in some form. Good to know that things are different elsewhere. I deal with 39 clubs and can’t think of any complete separation.Conversely, and just to show that anecdotal 'evidence' isn't really evidence at all. I've been a member of four clubs and they have all had separate Comp Sec and Handicap Sec.
