• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Check me out!

Or, how about

CAT 1 players play off the ladies tees as they need help scoring better and anyone who gets 2 shots a hole plays off the back tees, as let's be honest, they can get the most from their 'shots' this way.

Should even things out, no?

:smirk:

Nope you have it all wrong, most low handicap players can get it around well enough from the back tees, where as "The Weekend Warriors" struggle to get it round and this has an impact on the rest of the field and turns what should be 3 hour round into a 4 + hour round, so by moving these guys up to the ladies or junior tees if they are closer to the green would speed up play, not sure if it would help them score any better but should deffo speed things up a bit and would probably make them feel better about their game.

It can't make you feel good chopping your way round a golf course can it.

I thought we were discussing scoring as opposed to pace of play?

One day I aspire to be of a similar ability as you. Only without the attitude. Good luck to you, and I hope the weekend warriors don't hold you up too much next time round. How dare they!

Well done on your score.

I'm surprised a board comp is in stableford format, all ours are stroke-play and matchplay knock-outs.

Well done anyway and keep it going, your heading towards single bogey golf

To the OP, well done on your 45 points but would agree that rarely do you see not just cat 1's but single figure guys shoot that high a stableford score, it's 9 better than HC.

As to high HC's, I don't really particularly mind guys 19+ getting 2 shots a hole providing they are on the right holes, 2 shots to a par 3 is just all wrong.

I thought the 'discussion' was about how well the OP's round had gone over the weekend ...

It was, but invariably on these threads you get a stream of back slapping replies, which is boring. Surely it is more interesting to open up the discussion into the wider topic.

On a related subject, I'm not sure club membership would suffer if handicap limits were reduced/comp entry controlled hypothetically.

I'm never going to win anything, I may compete but in 8 years I've won one 5 club comp & one greensomes. I don't play to win stuff; I play because I love it. If you play to win things a handicap cap would surely motivate to improve.

But the stroke index may dictate that a par 3 justifies a 2 shot allowance!. There was one at Spalding when we played, I think it was an Si3.

I don't think it can be generalised that much.

stroke index doesn't indicate difficulty necessarily. It really serves a matchplay purpose. 2 shots on a par 3 in stableford is wrong.

There is a thread here, started yesterday, by a 9 capper who shot 7 better than handicap to win a comp and was rueing missed opportunities to shoot level par. It's rare but it does happen.

Not necessarily. There's a SI 3 par 3 at my club. It's about 160 yards downhill with only about 25% of the green front protected by a bunker. I've often seen totally duffed shots run down and onto the green... Near the pin even. It's a bit of a downer losing a hole to a net 0 when your opponent didn't even hit a decent shot..... SI isn't simply a measure of the difficulty of the hole.

Anyway, sorry to the OP that all this is being debated in your thread. It's all relative and we've all been delighted to shoot 86 at some stage so well done and keep improving!
