• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Check me out!

Handicap system is an essential part of what MAKES golf such a great game.

Absolutely no problem with high handicappers coming in with good scores - nor them getting 2 shots on some holes.

I'm happy enough to give them their proper allowance in a match too. It would be 'cheating' on my part not to! They might even get 2 shots on 1 hole in my case!

Some questions for Craw... What do you think the effect of that (the OP's) score was on the CSS? And a guy off 16 shooting 42 points? And you sneaking just 1 under your SSS?

Plenty of ignorance (of facts) around in this thread, but 'loudest wins' seems to be the rule a bit too often imo.

Certainly agree that Stableford gives the erratic player a benefit - and handicap is a Stableford metric and high handicappers are erratic. Medal, on the other hand, favours the 'consistent' player - whatever the handicap level - so a mix of comps works well - as does Divisions (at least 3 imo).

I've found that in the vast majority of cases, golf - and folk's attitude to it - reflects their personality pretty well. So the whinging low-cappers are likely to be whingers elsewhere so not good company - except to take the mickey about - anyway. Oddly, the majority seem to be from North of Carlisle too, but that surely must be a coincidence!:D

Seeing as your intent on turning this into another racist slur on the Scots I suggest you look into the history of who gave you this magnificent game!

well done on the 45 points

on the handicap debate, I will play off 18 or less if needs be, its only a number at the end of the day and wont detract from my enjoyment as I only look at my gross score generally as thats the measure of how I played overall and any improvement made. Stableford is more for fun and as a higher handicapper does indeed give me the best chance to win something.

Well said

Well played to the OP.

An old friend I know who has been off scratch for most of his life (not now as he is in his 80's) says that you can call yourself a golfer when you don't get shots on par 3's! Not sure I agree but I have always thought it a good yardstick to aim at for club golfers.

As for handicap limits etc, lots of the better courses in the UK have a maximum handicap limit and I think this is a good thing. It is 20 at Sunningdale and I think that is about fair.

I have never thought of higher handicappers playing from the red tees. It is a reasonable idea apart from the stigma that might be applied to blokes who have to do it! Junior tees if you are off 24 or over too maybe? Category prizes could be coded by tee colour.

Now see the debate is starting and I for one like this idea, clubs could offer a small discount to the higher handicap golfers thus allowing them to play only from the red tees or even the junior tees. What would the limit be, I think 20 is a bit on the high side so I would pitch it @ 18 and maybe look to reduce it over time. Our club has junior medals on a Sunday afternoon so rather than these guys playing in the Saturday comp they could pitch up and play their own comps after the juniors. How good would that make your Sunday morning stroll, bet we would get back to 3 hour rounds:whistle:

There is some real drivel on here from the 'better players'. It just comes across as bitter moaning. But please, do carry on.

Lots of love,

THE CHAMP

Do you honestly think your the only player to have ever won a medal or club competition? Mate enjoy the moment and hopefully the handicap will follow south to such an extent that you can call yourself "CHAMP"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:blah::blah:

(To talk the talk you need to walk the walk!)

Well Done Champ

However I don't know anyone who would be shouting from the roof top about winning a stableford where they were getting 2 extra shots on a good few holes, seem rather strange cos most guys would be embarrassed about it:o

Or, how about

CAT 1 players play off the ladies tees as they need help scoring better and anyone who gets 2 shots a hole plays off the back tees, as let's be honest, they can get the most from their 'shots' this way.

Should even things out, no?
