• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Check me out!

Bomber just trolls threads going around telling everyone they are rubbish. Best thing to do is ignore him.

Congrats on the score mate! Hopefully a hefty cut is in the post.

To the OP I say a hearty well done mate good play and deserved win for such a good score, that amount of points off any handicap is to be applauded for good play.

To the other very bitter comments, perhaps people should remember what golf is for many and that's a hobby they enjoy and the handicap system allows people of all abilities to play on an even keel. If rather be a happy hacker getting 2 shots a hole than a bitter Cat 1 player complaining about how someone should feeling guilty about needing so many shots.

It's a game and as long as everyone enjoys it handicap should be irrelevant to others but that's just IMO.

Well said.

I'll ask again, when was the last time you saw a CAT 1 golfer come in with 45 points? CAT 1 golfers never have a chance of winning anything when the current handicap system is so heavily biased towards the high handicap. This is a genuine fact.

Some myths for you

The reason it seems not many Cat 1 golfers win is because there aren't that many Cat 1 golfers

Good stuff Ian ... Make it snappy and get yourself down below 18. Right now the average handicap is about 13 and your not helping.

The average handicap for males is between 16-17.

It's a fair point, as a scratch golfer would have to shoot -9 gross. IMO it's the club who should be responsible for 1) ensuring people have competitive handicaps (ie they don't shoot ridiculously below). There needs to be more regular reviews of those players who are improving at a rapid rate and their handicaps should be assessed accordingly. 2) ensuring the course is set up on competition days to prevent ridiculous scoring. There's not much you can do about the weather etc but if you've got a qualifying comp and you put out the easiest pins / tees available, you're asking for low scores which only serve to bring up these types of arguments.

I had 41 points playing off 6 (3/4's) a few weeks ago and was the second lowest handicap. I won the comp and the one guy lower than me came second. If the course is set up right, and people's handicap's are fair, there's no reason why the lower guys can't win.

45 points is a cracking score well done..........but

this doesn't happen often but I kind of agree with Bomber (only a bit):o

no grown man should get 2 shots a hole

To the people that say no man should get 2 shots on any hole why don't we all just play off scratch on 7,500 yard courses with greens like glass using the most unforgiving clubs available.

That will make the game more fun won't it.......

I play golf for a hobbie and enjoyment and if my h/c comes down and I win a few comps then that is a bonus.

Why make a game that is tough at the best if times even harder and take all the fun out of it?

Golf can be played by people of all ages and abilities on a level playing field due to the h/c system.

Golf can be played by people of all ages and abilities on a level playing field due to the unfair biased h/c system geared towards the high handicap golfer.

Fixed that for you!

Your the voice of reason and Bomber's also got it right, the low guys get penalised every week.

I do agree though that golf is for all ages and to a certain point ability. It's hardly a golfer that has a handicap of more than 18 but as long as they tidy up the mess that they make then fair enough.

Recently played in a comp where a 4 handicapper shot 67 gross, the round of his life yes for you guessed it 45 points. Also played a match against a scratch golfer friday who was approx -6 thru 13 holes. Certainly possible if rare.

PS You must stop mixing your opinion with "genuine fact"

They should just have different categories for the prizes and it wouldn't matter who shot what - you just play within your category, and then we wouldn't need any forum arguments about a 20 h/capper shooting 45 pts. I've got no problem with someone playing their best ever round and winning their category..... wouldn't want to be playing against them though or have my game (h/cap) measured against theirs.

I have shot 46pts once in my life, that was 3yrs ago when I shot -4 playing off 6 (but it wasn't in a comp, never even made it to 40pts in a comp).

Agree with handicap comps, they are the lifeblood of club golf. However the concept of 2 shots a hole is a barrier to improvement. I know golfers who don't want to get to 18 handicap because of it.

I'd like to agree but there are many, many people who literally can't swing a club but still enjoy playing the game.

I don't see why they shouldn't have a h/cap relative to their standard.

if some people want to cheat the system by somehow NOT getting cut below 18 then that's something for the club to look at.

Fair enough. Still reckon 2 shots per hole and you should be off the red tees!!
