Hi yall ..
Any of ye change careers after a long time doing the same thing ?
Thinking of a change after 32 yrs in the motor trade .feel nervous of the change probably just too set in my ways
Interested to hear of yer thoughts and experiences . Did u stay in new job r jump jobs.
Thanks

The longer you've been in, the harder it is to get out...
I did 20 years in warehousing, inventory management and purchasing in various sectors but basically doing a similar job.
Jacked it all in to be a driving instructor 15 years ago and haven't looked back.
Its a risk but get it right and you'll feel better for it.

What area are you looking at going into?

I worked in the building trade for 11 years and had enough by then.
Got my offshore tickets and haven’t looked back, I’m a decent way up the ladder now and we are paid very well for the job we do.
My wife was fully supportive which helped and I never had kids at this point either.

Cool sounds like it worked well for u and urs . Wife is fully behind me . Just nervous ha .

Started out as an RO on merchant a ship but could see the end of morse wasn’t far away. Joined BT installing new digital exchanges, then switched to Med Physics in a hospital.

Moving to the private sector after that, which was a shock in the first year, still doing medical equipment. They merged their medical division with their industrial division and I, ultimately, headed their oil and gas division in Aberdeen before retiring at the end of 2017.

A change every so often keeps you engaged and alive. Grab it man, you’ll love it.

I'm also thinking of doing something different but no idea what. We are being outsourced on 1st April and there will be redundancies. If I get the chop I will struggle to find anything similar locally as my skills are niche and I don't want to commute at least 2.5 hrs a day each way to the big smoke. If I have to stack shelves then I will to make ends meet but fingers crossed something good turns up.

Worked in IT for 18 years, was decent enough at it.
At 40, decided you only live once and became a train driver for an Intercity TOC.
Apart from getting up in the morning, it's been a great decision.
You're at work for a long time, and spicing it up a bit is good for a lot of people. If I wasn't such an old git, I'd be thinking of doing something else (maybe learning French with Eurostar) but I'm think I'm near enough the end not to bother.

I started on the underground at 16

Apprentice signaller
Signaller
Line information
Service controller (current role)

Will never leave the company or my current job now.. that’s me from now (32) until retirement at 60 unless I go for instructor one day

However that said I’d love to learn a trade on the side incase anything every happened .: union membership can only protect you so much when you can loose your job in a moment

Car Park Attendant ;)

Worked in the same industry for 36 years before retiring in 2015. However in that time three pits closed that I worked at. Both times I transferred. To say I was nervous, anxious ( insert one of a thousand words). I kinda knuckled down and got stuck into it. It was like trying to prove yourself again. Some people I don't know how they got transfers, they were bone idle. Don't know how they got on, am sure in the private sector they would of been sacked.
Good luck me man.

Paperboy, slaughterhouse, uni, hatchery, print industry, scuba and first aid instructor, offshore commercial diver, inspection coordinator. 52 countries travelled and / or lived in. Biggest move was to Hong Kong when I was 26. My biggest thought at the time was “if I don’t do this I will regret it for the rest of my life.”

Go for it mate. One kick at the ball in this life.

I think one thing that has to be taken into consideration is the impact on your life situation (whatever that may be) if you have a mortgage to pay with a young family I’d say stay for stability , if your kids are older and your mortgage is low it’s much more worth the risk

Got any horror stories - what's the scariest thing a learner of yours has done? Pretty stressful for the teacher with a total novice at the wheel of your car I'd think.....even with dual controls.

One of my lads got out of the motor trade (bodyshop) after about twenty years... The insurers were making it difficult to make a decent living...

Now works in admin, office based, occasionally gets out on site... Way better salary but not so rewarding... Been in the role for about eight years can see him making another change soon...

Think the days of a job for life are over unless you get lucky...

I’ve thought about a change in career but not sure what I can do where I’ll get the same salary straight away!

As per my previous thread I’ve come out of self employment and back to salaried, doing logistics for a company moving cars all over the place, matching drivers to jobs then trying to get another job in on the back run.

Age 57 had no problems getting a job at all, start on 25 March in the meantime I’m doing Temp work, I’m currently an assistant premises manager at a secondary school. Actually quite enjoying it 👍😎

I’ve always had a job since being a paperboy aged 12, worked for Barclays for 18 years, then a professional house husband for 8 years , then computer tech for 17.

These days you have to be prepared to embrace change and to retrain.
Look at all the jobs that exist now that simply weren’t there when you left school.

Grab it with both hands and go for it 👍

“Paperboy”
Surely you mean “non binary news distribution officer”
