Career Change

Gonna be honest can’t think of anything worse than becoming a HM Coastguard 😂

Very important job and hard graft. Just anything that involves being on a boat other than drinking I’m out 😂

Most roles involve nothing to do with being in a boat! Quite the opposite. It's part of the wider MCA with a broad range of responsibilities. Even a civvi like me worked on IT and Comms. 😉

I made the major switch many year ago.

I worked in MOD related engineering and Maggie Thatcher coming to power meant half the factory were made redundant.

I switched to financial services, which I never regretted.

I am nearly 53 now just finished a 5yr contract. I completed the development which is unusual for product engineers. Most start and leave when it all starts to get a little hard.
To be honest I am tired, I have been burning it both ends with my wife’s illness and maintaining the 40hrs a week work plus keeping the family going.
I did look at the finances, I looked at the pensions and to be honest I think we could get by if we do some reshuffling. I don’t believe the savings are really working hard enough.
As for work, I am not sure how attractive a candidate I am due to my age. But also in engineering there has been a back step in salaries and IR35 has also impacted. The automotive industry has also gone into recession, but my opinion on that is it has been mismanaged. I am thinking I could do another area of engineering and not get involved in my specific area as I can earn a similar amount - as in knowing nothing pays as well as being knowledgeable (?). I don’t know how we got there. But having said that a bit of energy consumption, driving attributes, aerodynamics would all be interesting.

I work for myself, but have a team and made a plan from 50 to the present day. Put people in roles to make my life easier, spending less office time each year to none at 60. I'll work until I pop my clogs, that's just me, but how much and from where is up to me.

For the employed, there's a real focus on work life balance currently, so cutting hours, working from wherever, doesn't meet as much resistance as it once did.

My point is sometimes a career change is not necessary, just continue with changes to make it work for you.

Sound absolutely gleaming and the ideal balance you have there.

Unfortunately for me it does have to be a complete change due you my career. But I knew that day would come and I’m still a few years from it. Going to be hard going into a job that doesn’t give me at least 8 weeks paid leave a year plus all the extra days I accrue for going away.

Might have to look into some sort of self employed work I can do 3 days a week.

Maybe something in the private sector…

I'm ex-military too, so yes, completely different path. My service was many years ago and I fell into what I do, but really enjoy it.

Resettlement is not what it was and civvy's can be a bit weird :ROFLMAO: but my only advice would be to go into something you can excel at, as opposed to something you need to completely retrasin for and aren't any good at it!

In the army, the rank had respect all the way up the chain. In civvy street, anyone who wears a suit is the boss - takes a` little while to get used to it and I assure you, there's a lot of suit wearing twerps.

My biggest issue is going to be having to be more politically correct with the banter and speaking to people without telling them what you really think of them 😂

That's a challenge for anyone over 40!

On the the other post, most people talk about the RNLI when you mention HM Coastguard. 🤣

This may sound a bit off the wall but have you thought about looking at doing 2 different part time jobs?
It’s something I did years ago by complete accident and found that working with 2 different sets of people and clients it didn’t feel like work and I didn’t get bogged down in all the office drama.
