Iv been reading John dalys book and he states his lost around $55 million dollars in casinos so it got me thinking how much has he won in golf and a quick look on golf database says his won just under ten million now I understand his was getting around 4-5 million a year in sponsorships and extra money for appearances and play well bonuses but you would think his bank balance would be negative a bit like mine :)
I also did a quick search on tiger woods and his won just under $94 million what the heck!!! I now tiger woods is the first sportsman to earn a billion dollars but 90% of it is through sponsorships and appearance fees and so on.
I don't know the real point of this thread other than I was shock by the figures so I hope iv interested someone ;)
 
I remember watching the golf in 2010 and there was a chap, I forget who, leading a tournament after day 3.

He'd never won. Had a few runners up, 3 top tens, a few top 20's, but the commentator said he makes the cut most weeks.

He had made just over $12M over his career.

I'm sure the US tour rewards mediocre golf!
 
That's nothing.

I took a fiver off my mate back in 1983 when a fiver would still buy a round of beers (if you looked in the right places of course)

Sweetest cash I've ever earned.

Of course I immediately retired which is why I've never won anything ever again.




That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it..... :o
 
Fair play to them.

At least they earn it, footballers are given £3m+ a year just to play.

HOWEVER, they do bring in revenue for the club in shirts etc so I guess they get a good return

Think about the number of people in the world that play golf and then the number of people on the tour.....mediocre is not what I'd call anyone thats entering and making a living from those tournaments!

When I say mediocre, I mean by tour standards :thup:

Take Charlie Beljan as a prime example.

He's played in 21 events this year and made 6 cuts out of 21, missing the rest.

This year alone he's made $858,812

Last year he played in 22 tournaments, making only 9 cuts.

He won $1,373,528 ...... Admittedly he did win once last year.

Hope this clarifies my point :thup:

So what you're saying is once you make it to the tour, you don't have to do an awful lot or be particularly successful to make a tidy sum. So while not mediocre iin terms of the number of people who play golf. Certainly mediocre it terms of top level professional golf. For what it's worth, I agree with you.

Not really if we flip it to your argument of being "mediocre" that would then be perceived as mediocre money that Charlie is making compared to whats on offer on tour. Try paying taxes, coaches, travel, caddy and the rest of the team on $858,812 its not long in disappearing. At the end of the day rates are set, he is not being rewarded top dollar for mediocre golf, he is getting a poor income (by tour standards) from poor play in a lucrative sport.

While I agree, Look at it this way. 6 cuts made this year = $858,812

That's zero wins, 1 runner-up, 1 top 10 and 2 to 25's!

Personally, I would counter argue that he gets payed pretty well for 'poor' golf, which take me back to my original point.
