And we think footballers earn too much?

Tiger Woods' career earnings have pushed past $1.3 billion, according to a report published in the February issue of Golf Digest.

The report estimates that 88 percent of the money Woods has earned since turning pro in 1996 ($1.16 billion) has come from endorsements.

Woods made $71 million in off-the-course earnings to go with his $12 million on the greens in 2013. His $83 million total take was good enough to top Golf Digest's money list for yet another year.

After earning more than $100 million in endorsements in 2008 and 2009, Woods' off-the-course take underwent a hit due to fallout from news of his extramarital affairs. Things have rebounded slightly from a low of $62 million in endorsement money in 2011, according to the Golf Digest report. But Woods recently lost another deal, as Electronic Arts and Woods announced they were parting ways at the end of 2013 after a 15-year relationship.

Rounding out the top five earners were Phil Mickelson ($52 million), Arnold Palmer ($40 million), Jack Nicklaus ($26 million) and FedEx Cup winner Henrik Stenson, who earned $19 million on the course but only $2.8 million in endorsements.

Rory McIlroy finished in sixth with $18 million in endorsements and $2.6 million on the course. McIlroy signed a huge Nike deal but finished with only one win, the Australian Open, in 2013.

Golf Digest noted that the $40 million earned by the 84-year-old Palmer represented his greatest financial year, 40 years after his last PGA Tour win.

i think he deserves every penny (or dime) of it! without him, the game would not have the popularity it has today IMHO.

Do not have a problem with sponsorships personally. The Footballers getting the silly weekly wages and the scandalous ticket prices for prem games are what get my goat. There is a lot less golfers earning megabucks as well compared to Footballers

Palmer and Nicklaus still earning millions each year

I think the amount of money earned by the top sports people is a disgrace

The world is in a financial mess with millions struggling to feed themselves or put a roof over their heads and we see people earning more in a day than some do in a lifetime

But it's not just sportsmen or sportswoman - it's fat cat businessmen as well.

The rich get richer whilst everyone else struggles on

supply and and demand unfortunately. Whilst people are willing to pay the ticket price they'll keep making the mega bucks!

I thought he had given his ex-wife $700m and that at that time was half of everything. Does not sound right now I say it as lots will be in assets.

Big doe though hu!

He's not worth all that, the money should be past down to the journey man pro's who struggle financially, better prize money for lower places. $2 million in sponsorship just for turning up when the winner gets $600k, good grief the man should be embarressed but as we know he has no shame......

of course the 'winner' might only be getting half that possibly if Tiger wasn't there and attracting the crowds and media :smirk:

as for passing the money down to the poorer golfers who are struggling! would you happily cut your salary to make sure your competitors who arent as good as you get more money? thought not!

What a stupid comment, we are talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars here not a regular wage. Its this greed is good attitude you have which is killing golf and mankind in general.ridiculous

Golf was here before him and will be after, not sure about making the game more popular, maybe more so over there, I enjoyed it more (watching) back in the 80's and early 90's when the big boys really were trying to bash each other up on the course, only my opinion, don't begrudge him the money though.

The game was massively popular before Woods though ?

He did add spitting , tantrums and club throwing to the game though
