Have you ever bought a gadget too late ie just as the next great thing was released?

I was having a clearout yesterday and came across the mini disk recorder that I bought my son just as MP3 players were becoming the 'in thing'.

I had an MD player, and a hi fi midi system with MD player that recorded to MD - bought them in Japan back in 2001. Remember feeling quite cool sitting on the Tokyo subway with the MD player in my pocket. Actually only binned the hifi about 2 years ago as had stopped playing CD's by then and doing everythign online.

Got the Father in Law a Windows phone as he was determined to get a smart phone and the fact I could adjust the icon size made it far easier for him to use.
Of course, that system has gone now (a shame as I thought it was quite a nice system) and he never really uses it as a smart phone anyway.
Also I had a Nike Square Driver :D

My mate across the road who spent ages wiring his house for internet access just as wireless was becoming cheap and cheerful.

And I don't recall our kids using their Sony portable CD players that often...

nothing wrong with hard wiring, faster and more reliable

I too was a great fan of the Mini Disc. I still have a Mini Disc Walkman and Sony Mini HiFi system. When I bought my BMW in 2003, I specified the Mini Disc option Hi Fi system which I still use.

Better not by a new car they do even come with CD players.

I too still have a MD system in the bedroom but I only use it as a CD player and amp for my Logitech squeezebox

I love 'em. Broke my last one, in back pocket and sat down on it. Bought a replacement. Much cheaper than all these Androids. Just who is paying 300 notes+ for a phone???? Bought a screen to fix it too, £3.50 off e bay. Fixed! now have a map phone for the car and my Freecaddie back!!!!!

Not sure there is a 'right' time. As by definition that would probably be just as they come out, so you will pay premium pricing and always be upgrading. Which is kind of what they want you to do. I'd say as long as you make use of whatever you bought then it's a good investment, just because there is a newer version does not make your version useless.

My brother bought me a DVD recorder for Christmas one year. recording TV onto DVD was the height of cool for at least a week.
