My Father in law is going in for a triple heart by-pass and valve replacement on Wednesday. Is anybody back on the course after similar surgery and after how long so I can pass on a few anecdotes to cheer him up?
I need him to get back on his game again so he can invite me as a guest at Royal Cromer which he normally does when we go up to visit
;)

Hi,
My father had a triple heart bypass in 1987. He was back playing golf about 9 months after the operation.

Technology has probably moved on a great deal over the past twenty years and hopefully the recovery period shorter now. The operation was a bit primitive back then, I won't go into details.

All the best.
Richard.

Hi Goldenbare

I had a quadruple by-pass in May this year after a heart attack. I was in hospital for 5 days afterwards. however it took me about ten weeks before I was anything swinging a golf club and then only a little chipping and putting.

He wont start his cardio-rehab until about six weeks after his operation this should last for eight weeks.
He will go once a week and they will gradualy build up his strength. But it is the work he puts in inbetween sessions that will help.
Plenty of walking and light exercise's that they will show him.

As far as swinging a club or getting back to golf properly we are all indiviuals some do it quicker than others.

I lost a lot of upperbody strength he will have to build up his chest muscles up again but do what the cardio-rehab tell him they will set him targets.

Its like a lot of things in life you get out what you put in.

Heart wise he will feel like a new man its the opperation he will be mostly getting over.

Its nearly eight months since my op and I am just at the stage where I feel my golf is getting somewhere near to what it used to be.

I hope things go well for you farther-inlaw and that he is back playing some time late summer.

I recall walking across a car park of a golf club in Scotland hearing 2 golfers talking of their ills. One stated how please he was to be playing again after a triple bypass.

The other chap then smiled and told of his quadruple bypass!

So, I think these 2 guys show he will certainly get out there again.

I play with a fella called Pete that had a bypass a few years ago. He plays 4 times per week at the grand age of 68 and still pulls his clubs behind him.

He won a Wednesday medal last year with a gross 63, hence why we call him Pedro now ;)

Best of luck for your FiL!

Doh, thanks for the response, I hope things are going well for yourself, they seem to be as your back on the course, hopefully as the weather gets back to something decent you can finally get back to your previous best.
I know a couple of chaps at my club who have had 2 and 3 heart attacks and are back playing, they have my great admiration for getting back at it.
I don't know if you know Royal Cromer but a couple ofclimbs from green to next tee are a bit testing so he may have to find somewhere a bit flatter, he is over 70 already. ;)
