Whos the betting guru of the forum,surely with such a big gathering someone could open a book up and take some small wagers.I would but im not flush enough to take a hit,however willing to have a couple of quid on myself at 100-1

Have a list of players, and you can bet as much as you like on who you like.

Then
60% of the pot is for people who bet in the winner
30% of the pot is for people who bet on the runner up
10% of the pot is for people who bet on the the third place

Then you get a proportion of what you bet in the first place.

Say £100 in pot so £60 for those who picked the winner. Say the was
Bart £5 bet = £30
Lisa £2 bet = £12
Homer £2 bet = £12
Marge £1 bet = £6

I've managed to make that sound complex, but it is really easy.

I don't mind doing it, as long as it's like a tote pool as Society_Fan suggested. I can't afford to take a hit on it either.

How about 50% winner, 25% second, 15% third, 10% HTH ?

If anyone places with no money against them, split 50/50 between the player and HTH?

You'd also have to decide how the placings are made. Over 36, just the afternoon?
