Ball snobs

ill play pro v in season purely because I try not to lose them.

The only thing I look for in a ball is soft feel. Ultimately couldn’t give a monkeys.

In Golf there is ball snobbery, brand snobbery, driver snobbery, iron snobbery, wedge snobbery, putter snobbery etc etc etc...
We've all been "guilty" of it at some time.
But do you know what..?

It really doesn't matter.....
Sweet Jesus, if he says "Golf Ball" one more time.......

I'm not a ball snob, but then again I'm not one of those plebs who doesn't use a Pro V.

I think that the winter months you will see less difference, between a "top-end" ball and a. n. other ball, because there will be less roll, more stop from wet ground and the colder weather makes the higher compression balls compress a little less (like the Pro v 's etc in warmer months).

I'm not necessarily a ball snob, however, I am going back to Titleist when the new ball is released next year. I tried using Vice as a cheaper alternative, but found they mark and scrape really easily. There is also something mental, between my own ears, that trusts a Titleist over say, a Callaway. In my head, Callaway are not a ball manufacturer (same for Taylormade), so I don't trust it as much. That, for me, is the difference.

Now, asking about yellow balls vs white balls is a different subject for snobs!

Callaway bought the ball making plant of Spalding (at one time the biggest manufacturer of balls in the world).

I think it was summed up best earlier.
, it’s those that will only use a premium ball based on the status of the ball and nowt else.

I use a 'premium' ball because of performance. I suppose it depends on what your view of a premium ball is. Mine is a 3 piece or more ball with a urethane or similar cover
eg a Dunlop DP1-V3 is a premium ball under my definition.

Was playing with a guy who plays off 12 the other day, I thought he was playing with a dog. "Get down and sit" he shouted at his ball for four hours. Thing is he will play with any old crap, so how does he know what a ball will do when a pro V will react differant to a Dunlop.

Unless he is hitting the ball in a consistent way then even the same ball will react in a different manner every time he hits it. Unless you can replicate your strike pattern then ball brand probably won't make that much difference to your score. Using it for the feel however is a different matter.

That may be the case, but to me, they are a club manufacturer, not a ball manufacturer. It’s just the way I view it, as daft as it sounds. Just doesn’t give me the confidence.

Probably goes to show just how good Titleist have marketed their balls

I will swap my choice of ball during the season and will often try new releases (AVX etc). As a general rule of thumb I'll use a premium ball March-October when the conditions tend to be a firmer and then swap to a firmer ball in the winter when the greens are wetter and more receptive and the course is playing its longest to try and get as much distance (as a short hitter I need all the help I can get) off the tee. As far as makes go, I don't really care. This year I've used TP5, Vice Pro Plus, Pro V Z Stars and recently used AD333 Tour, NXT and even the original AD333.

As I've said before for a player of my standard, I believe that there is marginal difference between balls in the premium sector and I would struggle to recognise a particular make and model were the names and numbers covered or blanked. The same applies to the balls in the mid-sector. That is largely the reason why I have no brand affinity.

I'm a ball snob, stocked up on Bridgestone B330s last week at £19-99 per doz from Clubhouse golf.

Not buying the new model when these are being given away....

I sort of feel like I will be a ball snob, but i'm also a realist. Given that I lose on average 2 a round (often the bloody provisional) I'm not going out there to buy Prov1's just yet, this coming summer I hope to be better.

For the winter I went dirt cheap and bought some of those wilson deep red's, which I must say I absolutely LOVE the cheap crappy hard sound of the things, especially when putting. I don't think it matters a monkeys for my game though, if I hit the green it normally stops since I get enough height, I don't play low chips around the green i play for it to run. 80p is better than £3-4 a ball!!

I play with Pro V1s, I dare say I could play with a different ball and it would make little difference, but I feel confident playing with a Pro V and that is reason enough for me.

I'm generally happy to use any ball. A well struck Dunlop gives a better result than a poorly struck ProV1.
Most of the balls in my bag are ones I've found. And if there are any ProV1s and TP5s amongst them, then great. But no way am I paying £4 for a ball!

Mind you, I wouldn't ever use a Top Flite, so I guess that makes me a low-end ball snob
