Dull, maybe...but consider.

A player asks me if I know the distance. I (believing distance is not advice) offer "there's the 150 marker, so you've got about 170".....that's allowed. On the next hole (a long hole) he asks me the distance again, I look at my skycaddie and say "280 yards".....he's DQ'd..... :)

In the rules of advice as I remember, if he asks he's d/q'd and if you give it, so are you.

Edgey,

You've not read the Decision 8-1/2 correctly. That's not what it says. Have a look at the second paragraph again. ;)

DCB...would you be kind enough to put me out of my misery.

I have the ROG on my PC and a copy in my bag....I'm getting confused.

"Except when the Local Rule allowing the use of distance-measuring devices has been adopted (see Note to Rule 14-3), information regarding distance must not have been obtained from an artificial device used during the stipulated round. A player who obtains distance information that he knew was measured by anyone with an artificial device during the player’s round is disqualified under Rule 14-3."

Under 'definitions' page 30 of the book, distance does not qualify as advice. So yes, you can tell your partner, and also your opponents.

My understanding is that it is OK to tell your partner BUT it is a penalty to offer or to be asked by an opponent to provide yardage information if it is obtained via GPS/Laser.

I could be wrong but i am sure i read this in "Decisions"

Edgey
Yes you are wrong as quoted above.

As has been said already in this thread, you cannot give (when asked) or offer advice.

Distances however are information not advice, and as long as a GPS or laser is permitted by local rule of that club, it doesn't matter whether the distance advice is given by reference to the GPS unit, or by reference to on course distance markers.

"I could be wrong but i am sure i read this in "Decisions""

This is exactly why I suggested that people should actually look up the answers to their queries rather than going on an "I think I read/remember/????" theme.

I was taught to read, learn, inwardly digest, and understand.

The ROG are very available, in booklet for the course, on line, on apps and if you still don't understand than there are the decisions available on line. There is no excuse for complete mis-interpretation. Heck. Even an old grumpy computer-phobe git like me can get it right sometimes.
