I played in our invitational silloth at the weekend and it's sparked a question in my head.

When you are on the green you can choose who plays first out of your team. So if player A is on in 2 and player B is on in 3 you can get player B to putt first even if he is closer and secure the 4 so player A can be aggressive for the 3.

But, is there actually anything in place to prevent this being applied beyond the green? So if you are 220 yards back on a tough par 5 can you get your playing partner to play his 3rd shot on so you know he is 2 putts from a par and you can go for it? Or even, in a extreme example could you stand on the tee and watch how your partner does on the hole before making your decision on how you are going to play it out? So watch him play, see that he has a par so trying to drive the green for example?

Just to be clear, I have no intention of doing this ever but I wondered if there was any form of ruling in place for this.

Can play in any order within the team if it's your team to go and also within the new recommended "ready golf" just go whenever you are ready provided you aren't causing harm or putting someone in danger

So, in theory, there is nothing stopping someone from taking this sort of advantage and letting their partner play the hole and knowing the score before hitting at all?

I would have thought you'd be done for slow play if you do that too many times though?

I don't think you can stand on the Tee and watch your partner and the other 2 Ball play the hole to a conclusion before you Tee off.

What if the other 2 Ball did the same? You've made the 4 Ball into 2 x 2 Balls

In theory, neither of the other 2 could play their second shots before until you've teed off because your team will always be 'away'.

So it's a single, a 2-ball then a single

Exactly my thoughts

In practice they (well certainly me) would just get on with it and play in the normal way with you playing partner ....and the next group to arrive on the tee would just play through you when you didn't tee off on a par 4 with the rest of your group on the green...

On the next tee you would clearly be in breach of 6-7 in respect of your partner ie between his finishing that hole and starting the next you would be causing undue delay. That you are acting within other rules wouldn't be a sufficient defence (see a decision relating to a wrong ball decision where going to recover your ball that was played by someone else could be a breach of 6-7 if it took much time).

Seen partners in Ryder cup play out of turn many times to try and put pressure the opposition. i.e longest/best drive goes first to try influence outcome.
