Zoned and Drawn Tee Times

Pre-covid we did something similar...all of our comps would run in a block from 7.30am until the last player went out. When signing up, players could specify if they wanted an Early, Middle or Late tee time. Obviously what constituted a Middle or Late tee time would very much depend upon the number of entries....sometimes late would be around lunchtime, sometimes it could be around 10.30am.

The actual three balls would then be drawn within the general constraints of when players indicated they wanted to go out.

The random draw nature, even with the constraints of loosely defined time blocks, worked well and was a great way of helping new players integrate into a club. The vast majority of regular competition entrants at our club all know each other so its very rare that you end up playing with total strangers, even with a random draw.

Since Covid we've moved away from the blocked tee times, comp entries are spread throughout the day, folks book their tee times when they want and organise their groups accordingly. You end up playing with the same people week in week out and frankly, after a few weeks it becomes a bit monotonous.
You speak so highly of your mates, are the feelings resiprocated?

We have three comps where it’s drawn

Two have time zones which is the Captains Day and Presidents Putter

Both are done to help increase meeting new people and it’s good to mix with the membership

The time zones allow you to still arrange your day

And the other is the club champs where is obviously handicap order with lowest our first

Actually....the comment was representative of the feelings of several players who have told me that they are desperate to get back to the drawn tee times and the variety that drawn comps bring.

Is there anything stopping them putting their name down with another group now?

We can book any spare slot.

Playing with your mates there's a higher chance of those minor rules infringements being made.

I'm sure everyone here is cleaner than clean but if you play together regularly it's more likely that you'll be adopt some of your "friendly game" practices, particularly advice:

"What club did you hit there?"
"Is this wind into? A couple of clubs maybe?"
"Looks like a left to right breaker to me"
"I'd lay up there"

County events are the worst for this in my experience, ive pulled someone up in every event this year...

The current demand for tee times results pretty much in there not being any free slots!!

The best it gets at the moment is if a group of 8, or maybe 12 if you are really lucky, manage to get two or three tee times reasonably close together and you can arrive at the club at the same time and throw the balls up to see who plays with who. But over a period of weeks it still means folks largely play within the same "community".

Club Champs at our place in strict handicap order, lowest first, for first round, and in score order, highest gross first, for second, so late on day 1 and early on day 2 for me!

Its exactly how my club run their comps. Early window or late window - then hope you get your preferred time!

I really do find clubs where you play with friends massively open to manipulation. Might not happen often, but it will definately happen.

For the men: Zones and you can put down your playing partners. They go out in threes. However the zone can be all day if you want if you are not fussy about when you go out.

For the ladies: Book a tee time and you can also book your partner. Ladies are "encouraged" not to play with the same person more than twice in the season.

You only took up the game in 2020 and yet you find “clubs where you play with friends massively open to manipulation.”

I doubt you’ve come across many of these yourself, maybe you’d be better off taking your time rather than being in a rush to judge.

We use for one comp in our seniors. It is noticeable that we have reduced number of entries for it compared to normal senior comps.

We have zoned draws, completely random within the zone, for the three main medal comps of the year.

I think it’s a great idea and wish there were more comps where we did this. I don’t mind playing comps with different people.

Hes right though, it is open to manipulation when playing with friends. It's strange that in a qualifier when 2 of a 3 ball have qualified for a club championship and no3 requires a good score, chances are he gets it on the last day.

In your opinion Val, just as in imo it can happen regardless of how a comp is done.

We have it for some Comps and I have no issue with it, what I’m not going to do is question the integrity of people who’s Club choose the entry procedures.

As some have said on here it is a hobby for 99% of people and they should be free to choose who they spend their leisure time with, forcing them to play with people they may not want to is wrong.

No need to be so defensive Paul, yes it's my opinion but yes it also happened at a club I was a member of.

Not being defensive mate, just trying to get some people to see both sides.
It comes up time and time again on here, and mostly backed up with no more than hearsay.(y)
