Your Own Howler

Nearly had a stinker of one in the GM centnary final , Homer witnessed it all up close ha ,, was playing ok (didnt know how ok at the time ) played a beautiful 3 iron over water to the par 5 17th .. THE PLAN was to give it a chance but have a tap in birdie , plan didnt work went miles past , so i thought the same PLAN for the birdie putt then , plan didnt work again , went horsing past . luckily made the par putt back tho ..

In my defence the greens were very slick , but in reality id already played 16 holes so should have known better ..
Learned my lesson & left a full green putt dead for tap in par on the last
got away with it

Playing at mine few weeks ago with a mate.Winter tees on-I refuse to use the ones where you cant get a tee in properly......5th tee......I took my drive about 5 yards BEHIND the winter tee......hit a BAD drive and it caught the FRONT of the winter tee 'mat'..bounced back......and the ball ended up 10 yards BEHIND me!!!....

The 8th green at my course, possibly the hardest green ever in the whole world. 5 putted twice.

Last year in the annual medal matchplay at my previous club (Epsom) I was drawn to play the captain who was also club champion playing off 4.

1st hole after 2, I am pin high left (the wrong side) he is pin high right . The greenkeeper has obviously had a bad argument with the wife as the flag is on a steep slope. 1 chip fat, leave myself above the pin for 3, next chip is off the green for 4. Chip up to about 3 feet my opponent says nice chip and goes to line up his putt but the ball runs back and it ends up behind me off the green again for 5. Chip short again but not as far up the slope so stays on the green..... (6)

Next shot about 4 feet past the pin and stops on the high side again for (7) downhill breaking putt lips out and ends up off the green for (8) chip back up to about 3 feet past the pin (9) and then hole a very similar putt to the one I had just had and knocked off the green! Pin high in 2, walk off with a 10.

I had also 8 putted the 4th at Epsom with another pin on a slope which couldn't be lagged up to and required a 4 footer to be holed.

If you think you can Putt go try and play epsom after a dry spell....

Playing in a society game at Harewood Downs , Amersham, playing the 8th par 3, 191 yards into a stiff breeze over a valley with high banking at the back of the green.

Took my driver and it slammed into the bank at the back and rolled onto the top edge of the green about 15 ft from the hole.
the green sloped very steeply after the hole, back towards the tee, so my one thought was " Forget the birdie, Lay it up short and take the par for 3 points"

Needless to say, the putt went sailing past, down the slope, gathering pace, bounded into the thick rough 30 yards from the hole and 15 feet below it, 2 hacks to get it up on the green and 2 putts left me with a big fat blob

Forgot about this one a few weeks ago... I was about 5 yards from the front of our 8th hole after two magnificent (for me, it's 420 odd yards long) blows.

I walk off with a six :(

There's to many

Last Monday on frozen greens was interesting though , me balls were skidding all over the place

(must buy pants )

The 5th @ Perranporth - a par 5 over a bid dune. Baked hard ground and a bitterly cold howling gale.

We had spoken with the guys who played it the previous day and they said it was nigh on unplayable and you just couldn't be short on the green.

We were in contention as a team and were 6 under after 4 on this day too, so looking very good. I had 100yds for 3rd shot and hit plenty of bat so as not to be short, pitched in the huge bank behind the green and trickled down onto the fringe - perfect!

I could not have dollied the putt any softer without leaving the headcover on my putter. The ball was tracking so slowly that it was wiggling about side to side as it was tracking. It went past the hole and gathered pace before going another 30ft off the green and 40yds down the fairway and into a little dew pond water hazard.

Got my lob wedge out and strode after it. There was long tufty grass in the hazard that stopped the ball getting wet, so I got in there and had a good old hack at the grass with some practice swishes - before my pro reminded me that my ball was in the hazard and so I also had a penalty for grounding the club!!!!

Ball in pocket - team score for hole = 1stableford point!!!:(

Challenge faded rapidly from there

1st round of our club champs this year. +4 gross (playing off 9) on 18th tee (short par 3). Went for the flag at the back of the green, over hit it by about 4 yards into back bunker.

Left my second in there.

And my third.

Fourth went 15 ft past.

Fifth missed.

Just about holed the sixth for a triple and a 77.

Gutted.

try the 7th hole at garesfield.....hardest WINTER green ive ever played......you might be lucky enough to never have to play it..lol

That's gotta be a shocker if its worse than the 8th!

gm north east meet must off been about 6ft on there 3 putts later

Great!!!!

No matter how well I'm putting its always the same on here. Even worse in the summer when the greens are even faster

For the OP & another couple of the examples where after putting the ball is 20-30 yards off the green/down slopes etc...

Didn't we have a thread a few months back that highlighted that it is within the rules that in this type of scenario & after putting & ending up 30 yards off the green you can, if you want, then call it unplayable, take stroke & distance penalty & replay from where you first putted?
