Your Biggest Blowup In a Round

Right I'm going to display my ignorance here. (Be gentle I'm a new golfer)
I hear people use those numbers to say their score...9 and 7 and the like but I have no idea what they relate to?
Can anyone explain?

biggest blow-up, that's easy

the first round for my handicap, playing with the handicap sec and his mate.

I'm teeing off first on the 10th; the mate says "you're 6 over for the front 9. keep going like that and you'll be off 12."
promptly crashed and burned on the back 9, 27 over!

ever since, I've never liked being told the score.

My biggest was the day of Lady/Princess Di'd funeral. Didn't care much for the outpouring so played the Medal with a couple of others - practically the only ones on the course.
Played reasonably well round to 11. I was under handicap and pretty steady. 11th is a short dog-leg right. 6 iron to the elbow, wedge on to the green. Trees/OB/clag going for the pin so not many did it.

Or should that be 5 shanks in a row OB - yep 5 in a row. Only case of the dreadeds that I've had - save the odd one here and there.
I'd have been writing down a number in the teens if I hadn't picked up the bag, called it a day and walked the rest of the course - the one and only NR I've ever put in.

Had the odd shot gooing round just to see but I was still doing it so gave up for the day.

Next week I won Captain's Day - go figure......

My biggest blow up has to be when playing in the club championship I shot a 3 under par 29 on the front nine only to be followed up with a 6 over 39 on the back.

What would I give to be able to do a 39 on the front or the back.

Fragger (H'cap about a million)

Not really massive blow-ups but rounds where I wish I could have the last 3 or 4 holes again.

Years and years ago, -4 gross after 14 and finished double, birdie, bogey, bogey for -1 71. Still my best round to date (not in a comp).

October last year, presidents day, level gross after 15, finished bogey, par, double, and lost by 1pt.

Luckily I don't seem to lose the plot completely when playing well, but I can easily lose the plot for a whole round like the 98 I shot in first comp at my new club!

I havent had any real blow ups yet but my dad who is my playing partner told me of a few he had....One that sticks out is in only his 10th competition with a four ball stroke play on our 10th hole which is a dogleg right with 1 lake in front of the tee box OOB on the immediate right OOB on the left side of the fairway and your second shot played over a lake to an elevated green he put 7 balls into the lake in front of the tee box.
2 of his playing partners walked off but the 3rd stayed with him until he managed a good one off the tee....He has never played a day where he doesnt tell me of his respect for the player that stayed and gave him the confidence to overcome the challange...... His words of wisdom for my father were "Dont worry about them Joe they were learners once too"......

There have been a few but last season was -4 after 11 holes and managed to double 12 and treble 14 for a one over 71.

Was my best score of the year but I didn't enjoy it. The treble on 14 was like a living nightmare, it's only a 3 wood, wedge hole......usually :o

Yes, I bottled it!

Was -3 stood on the 16th tee a par 5 I could comfortably reach in 2. Sliced one over into the claggy trees so reloaded. Did exactly the same again , reloaded and did it for the 3rd time. Reloaded (playing 7) and hooked it over onto the adjacent fairway. Couldnt find any of my first 3 so trudged off to play the 4th. This is where it gets nasty...I blocked it big time and lost it in the clag on the right again :D :D

Anyway I had a little chuckle to myself (believe that if you want) and decided i'd not bother with another.....I was young at the time and didnt realise I could have still got cut..oh well wasnt thinking straight for quite a while after that ;)

First round of Captains last year stood on the first tee and put 3 ball OB left in the trees. Playing 7 off the tee I pushed my next shot up the right side of the fairway and it just ran into the rough and up against the trunk of a tree. Played out backwards and ended up with a 12.
Second tee and I put 3 balls in the pond at the end of the tee. 7 off the tee again with a 6 iron and ended up with an 11.
Another couple of scrappy holes and then I started going for everything. Ended up with a 97 net 81 after playing the back nine in 4 over gross.
Needless to say I didnt make the second day. Oh what could have been.

End of last year, was all set to record a new course record (after the course alterations)

Was 4 under par stood on the 16th tee and was looking to finish 3(4), 4(5), 3(3) to get me to 6 under.

Ended up finishing 5, 7, 5 (bogey, double, double) to come in with a 71 :( :(

My biggest blow up would have to be the second round of the 08 club championship at goswick 4 back after the 1st round on the saturday. 36 on the sunday and it was blowing a gale played the 15 holes in level par playing quite frankly amazing golf head totally screwed on. finshed the round double, triple, single to be 4 back going into the last round the way it finshed when i was stood on the 16th tee i was more or less in the lead.

Other than that the wort start to round i had was starting 7 3 9 in the first round of the scottish boys open strokeplay 6 over after 3 and finshed 6 over.

No really big blow ups to report but bitter disappointment last year when I went to play at Whittington Heath in the Midlands for the North versus South forum match.
We had booked to play at Beau Desert the day before as we had heard good things about it.
Arrived there and met up with Vig, TonyN, Bobmac, Jan, Eejit and the course looked absolutely gorgeous.
Started off really well, was hitting my driver superbly and not doing too badly with the irons either (for a change).
Reached the turn 3 over gross for 21 points, and was cooking on gas.
A two ball had caught us up, so we sat down by the 10th tee to let them through. 10th hole was the shortest hole on the course, under 100 yards over a small valley, easy peasy.
But I fatted my wedge into the bunker in front of the green, fatted my bunker shot and proceeded to three putt for a double bogey 5 and my first blob.
Next hole 6, next hole blob...bugger.
Hanging around on the 10th tee had cost me.
I think I ended up with 34 points which on most other days I would have gladly taken prior to teeing off.
But everything about that day was right. The course was fantastic, the weather was perfect, the company was great, and I was really hitting the ball well. I honestly thought I was going to have a 40 pointer on a course I had never played before, and to be honest, it was no push over.
But it wasn't to be. Shame.

Had a 9 on the first hole at moray old course in an open.

While waiting for my tee off noticed everyone was using driver off the tee and as its only about 320 yards I though to my self 3 iron ( my go to club of the tee if its tight and can normally hit it about 210-220)
Perfect for my gap wedge.
Topped it into the thick rough in front of the tee, took 5 to get out.

Ironically played pretty well the rest of the round and made the buffer!!!!!

Had a few, but some that come to mind, is playing the front 9 in one over gross, and then dropping 12 shots in the next 3 holes.
Playing a very short par 4, trying to play a miracle second shot, dumping 4 balls into the brambles and rubbish and walking off with a 13 on the card.
Playing in my first club championship at my new club, not playing particularly well in terrible weather, and marking a 14 on the card on the par 4 12th. The only consolation I can take from this one is that I two-putted

Having shot 72 gross 2 weeks before the captains weekend 3 or 4 years ago and getting cut from 12 to 8 I thought my chances were good. A 77 - 69 for the first round put me 3 off the pace. One over gross stood on the ninth fairway with a 6 iron in hand during the second round. However a shank followed by a thined pitch OOB saw the start of my continued downfall. I finished with a 89 in that second round.
I am now no longer a club member, only play 12 times a year off 13 (best score was 28 points last year), but just about starting to enjoy my golf again
