Club Champion 2025

1st round of Club Champs…130 playing for scratch and nett trophies.

Frustratingly goodish round of 8 over gross - but missed four putts of under 2ft and one 3ftr. What might have been, and though ‘that’s golf’ I’m pretty fed up with myself over the short putts.

Four over gross would still never going to be challenging for the scratch, but 4 under nett would have been good for nett. But that’s pointless thinking. I’ll make the cut for tomorrow and hopefully will have a later morning time - and maybe tomorrow I’ll play similar but hole these darned putts.

Have to choose at ours !
You can’t play in the net if your playing in the scratch.

Our Club Champs this weekend....not playing as I e lost the will for comps at the moment...
Good job I didn't enter as I've got a Tennis Elbow flare-up to fight..
The other good job I didn't enter is some of the scores coming through.....most of the guys in my handicap range are coming in 10-15 over gross
Or 12 shots off the lead...a 2 capper shot 1 over gross...even the +1 capper could only shoot 2 over...
Plenty of high scores to come in as the wind has got up....
Glad I don't have to pick myself up and do it all over again tomorrow...

Jeez, your two clubs have the CCs pretty late don't they? Ours was back in June, feels like a lifetime ago.
We’re moving it to July next year. Not sure why. Maybe we want to do an earlier Autumn major greens maintenance…this year for last time we start on Monday. Course today was in great condition tee to green.

On entering scratch OR nett, why shouldn’t I have a tilt at both? Rules of the comp is that I can’t win both. Scratch takes precedence. In unlikely event of player scoring best gross being also best nett, Club Champion is scratch winner, 2nd nett takes handicap prize. I’m not aware of any issues or conflicts.

Anyway. My 8 over gross sees me replace a scoring 7.1 towards the bottom of my 20 with a 6.1 and a small cut in my HI to a new all-time low of 5.7…possibly even 5.6 (assuming no PCC). PH for tomorrows 2nd round won’t change (in accordance with the rules of the competition).

Not a good 2nd round in our Club Champs with a messy 11 over gross. But I must remind myself that not so many months ago I'd have been quite OK with that.

Plus I mustn't forget that over the two rounds of the club champs only five players (of the 84 who played both rounds) was under handicap for the 36 holes - it was windy and we were off the 'plates'...it was playing long and difficult.

And in any case - I was playing primarily for handicap, and though my 2nd round did nothing for it, my 1st saw my HI drop to 5.7 - my lowest ever WHS HI and off back tees not far from my lowest ever handicap of 6 which I had for only a couple of weeks back around 1987/88.

Onwards and Upwards (or for my HI that should be downwards)

Was talking about this yesterday at the club and it sounds like its only a thought - based upon some members thinking the course is better condition in July. Nothing to do with the greens team and maintenance.

Certainly for those I spoke with yesterday the consensus was to keep it where it is, last weekend in August. Not only does late season generally give our course time to recover if summer has been harsh - though that would be unusual - but having the main club comp at the end of the competition season is something to work towards - and a great way for the club to round things off end of season.

Personally I tend to improve as the season goes on, having it earlier would see me at 'less than my peak' :ROFLMAO:

Hope we stay 'as is'

Completed this morning a club survey on the competition committee proposal to move the Club Champs from last weekend in August to mid-July. Rationale for the move is related to more likely better weather (don't they understand the weather during the school holidays) and course condition - so later in the year course is more susceptible to such as worm casts.

I vote to keep it as is. Said that I like having the CCs at the end of the season as a climax and as something I can work on my golf towards
