• Thank you all very much for sharing your time with us in 2025. We hope you all have a safe and happy 2026!

Your 2016 end of season report.

I've just bought a set of Ping i irons and wedges and often hit a 4-iron off the tee on shorted par 4's where the trouble is near the greens - I wondered if this crossover club would suit me as I did try some hybrids but could n't stop hooking them. What crossover do you have and how does it fit in to your club make-up? I carry a 3 wood but hardly ever hit it...

Kenny,

re the Crossover I tried both the 3 and the 4 and whilst the 3 was longer (obviously) the off line disbursement was greater, so I went with the 4 as my ultimate goal was better distance and hitting the fairway. I average about 215-220 with the Ping but if you get it rolling on hard ground etc I have had 240-250. (garmin s20) I use it as I am not 100% confident with the driver and on long par 3s. I never use a 3 wood or a hybrid. my 5 and 6 irons are good enough for me at the moment until I get confident with the smaller woods.

It gives a great flight, is easy to hit whether tee or off the deck and is nice when your PPs pull out a driver and you are only 20 or so yards behind them with an iron or land plum in the middle of a fairway! :)

Pretty good for me. Reduced my handicap by 2 shots, came 5th in the county seniors and got called up to the county team where I played 2 matches and won them both. Played 6 matches for the club scratch team with 5 wins and 1 half. Won a monthly medal, broke 70 for the first time, had some good results in mixed scratch opens (2nd at Burnham and Berrow) and most importantly some signs that my short game is starting to come back.

Decent.

Nice one Gordon.

20 qualifiers. Went from 9.5 to 10.7 with one small cut.

A long season of patience as I waited for consistency to return after swing changes (as well as new irons, wedges, 3w and putter). Bucketloads of 0.1s but just started to turn a corner last couple of weeks, 36 points, net 69 (Medal in very windy conditions, came 1st in Div 1), then 37 points in a N/Q when I wasn't really trying. I feel like a low round is close but have only 2 qualifiers left, then I'll be away 6 weekends in a row so effectively that's 2016 over.

Main thing is I feel like I'm capable of far better golf now than I was last season, so even if the end of this one doesn't spring a low round I'm fully sure next year will be a different story.

An interesting golfing year for me. I have joined a club again for the first time in 13 years. I have to say I absolutely love the place. The course is wonderful but really tough and the members I have met have made me feel very welcome, It is a privilege to be a member.

My golf has been mixed. Some good stuff mixed with some utter tripe and I am yet to put a really good round together at my new club. I have managed a couple of 2 over par rounds including a polished -3 back 9 but have never really had a decent front 9 holes.

My handicap is not where I feel it should be at 5.7 but I cannot complain really as I am just not playing enough to get much better, primarily because I have a new job which is very time consuming. Additionally, the difficulty of the course is also a factor in my handicap. I think I am hitting the ball well enough but feel my home course is 2-3 shots harder than most.

Onward and upward though. I do plan to play much more now and will improve, I am certain of that. Just need a modicum of consistency.

Of the very limited golf I played this year, I have faired pretty well. Only managed 7 qualifiers this year, almost got the handicap down to 2 and won the club championship for the first time, so really not a bad return for a season blighted by injury and family weddings.

Apart from winning the championship, the other highlight of the year was playing western Gailes for the first time - unadulterated golf porn!

I have had a productive year for a change!

Handicap drop from 11 to 6.9 (1 comp left on Sunday)
Finished 2nd on countback in an Open competition.
Got my name on the board for the Summer KO tournament.
Won a couple of medals and have a nice sum in my pro shop account :)

Bit of a "nothing" year for me golf wise.
Not been playing anywhere near enough to find any consistency, the few qualifiers I have played in this year have seen my handicap slipping out slowly but surely.
Have enjoyed playing a few "new to me" courses, but I find I am struggling to motivate myself to go and play as much as I should.
I know that there is still a game in me somewhere, but at the moment I am finding myself coming up with more and more excuses not to play.
I have renewed my membership at Cooden for another year but unless I can motivate myself more during the coming months I doubt very much whether I will continue with it to be honest.
Most qualifiers and decent competitions seem to be held on Saturdays there, which are a "no go" for me with work.
The odd ones that do crop up on a Sunday tend to coincide with me working!
There is absolutely nothing at the club on my traditional Wednesday off, apart from the regular WAMS meetings, where the retired guys go to play foursomes/greensomes. Not for me I'm afraid.
At Crowborough Beacon we used to have the rabbits meetings on a Wednesday afternoon, which was a well organised individual Stableford competition and I used to play in it every week.
It was something to look forward to.
I just don't fancy wandering down to the club on a Wednesday afternoon and hanging around the 1st tee in the hope of getting a knock with somebody, and I never fancy going out for a game on my own.
Ho hum.

Having played with you a few times I have no doubt it will come down when you play more regularly

No' bad. Handicap is fairly static, as I haven't played a qualifier since May - been playing more social golf and more matchplay than previous years.

Highlights have been first outings at the PGA Centenary at Gleneagles, Western Gailes and The Old Course. Each of them brilliant, for different reasons. Won the summer singles matchplay too, which was a nice bonus.

Haven't played as many comps as I'd like but I've loved the golf I have played. Short game is showing signs of life, too.

Looking forward to next year already :)

In a word, crap.

Haven't got near any of my goals thanks mainly to poor iron play earlier in the season and a season-long struggle with the flat-stick interspersed with injuries.

Just returned to playing at the weekend in our Ryder Cup competition from five weeks off following a minor rotator cuff tear in time for the final medal of the season on Sunday and one last chance at finishing the season on 12, but 0.8 higher than I finished last season.

Think I may have returned too soon though, and undecided if I'll actually take up my slot.
