Young and selfish.

The company's have already come out and said the government are being complete fantasists about getting the numbers of ventilators needed, I'm afraid people just need to look at the reality of the situation

Did you study history at school, ( or are you studying history at school?)
Either way you should know that in the last war factories' production was switched to producing arms, including planes.
They had no previous experience of those products but they did the necessary.
It can be done again re the ventilators, and it will be.
If necessary by order of the government.
If this really gets bad, persons of your attitude are going to be seeing the unpleasant side of authority, and I think it will be a shock. It will not be like your teacher was, bluff and toothless.

Yes I actually have a very good knowledge of history, theres a slight problem with this, the companies have already told the government about the challenges of shifting manufacture to produce ventilation units, it's not possible in the timescale needed. Also another is the serious lack of manufacturing industry in this country in comparison to the mid 20th century

Its 1:35am here in Spain, and I'm tired. I retired from the 2nd largest ICU vent manufacturer in the world 2 years ago. At the weekend I spoke to the Sales mgr.

Short version; not a snowballs chance in hell. The requirement will be missed by over 90%. A quick figure to ponder; the USA will require a further 780,000 vents. Add the global requirement... the target will be missed by millions.

I took myself out of the club competition this Saturday as I do not know the people I would be playing with.
Now I am worried about playing golf at all and bringing the virus back to my household. If predicted deaths are 250k and the government sees a success in only 20,000 deaths this is not an age thing at all it concerns everyone.
Pubs, restaurants, shops, airlines and golf courses will go under and close. My advice is to cabin up and look after your family and friends.

Problem is people are going to have to become immune to the virus, it's not going to go away. It's a numbers game the government are playing and they are trying to lesson the burden on the NHS but the reality is it's going to be overloaded regardless. I'd personally rather just get it, let my system build an immunity to it and go about my business as normal. Of course I am washing my hands and all the rest of it but I'm not locking myself away for weeks. I'm still under the age of 30 and I'll take my chances ?

Nice to see you're keeping regular Martin:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::poop:

Mod edit: Had to edit the bit in bold, which has the result of making this post utterly pointless.....Sorry Bro ?

Homer has been shut at golf for years

SORRY, SORRY, SORRY....

My numbers don't quite stack up... too tired last night.

The projection in the US is circa 1.9m cases, of which about half, 950,000 will require an ICU vent. The current number of vents in the US is 140,000. However, not everyone will require it on day 1. The virus is expected to run for around 2 years. Vent time for those that get it is averaging around 8 days. There are calculations you can do based on expected peak number of cases that will give you a good idea of vent requirements. There will still be a massive shortage. Will it run into millions? Probably not but the gap between what is needed and what can be made is enormous.

Left without any interventions, e.g. lockdowns, it will peak earlier and hit more people. You've seen the pictures coming out of Italy with army tents with hospital beds in. FLATTEN THE CURVE. Do the right things now. Social distancing will help, isolation more so.

Those of you that think you're young enough and fit enough to outrun this you are playing Russian Roulette. If the person that coughs on you has a strong dose of it good luck. I've had proper flu, maybe twice, definitely once about 30 years ago when I was very fit. It took 6 months to get over it.

FLATTEN THE CURVE. Do the right things now. If it doesn't get you, you will have been very lucky, but it will get your family and friends. If the curve is flattened there is a chance of an ICU bed. More people will survive if the curve is flattened.

I remember when I was in my teens I never expected to live past about 25.
Several friends with the same life style died before the age of 21.
Several others have died in the intervening years as a direct effect of what they were like when young.
On a personal level marriage and family changed my attitudes but probably not until in my late 20s.

These days I care more about my family than myself and it is for their benefit I will be cautious as I know the effect on daughters mental health could be dramatic if I were to die.

Obviously it’s your life and you choose how to live it.
Not to frighten you, but please don’t believe being under 30 gives you a guarantee of survival if you were, unfortunately, to get infected.

One of the youngest to die in Spain? 21, a very fit football coach. He had undiagnosed health conditions which only came to light after he caught Covid-19.

Maybe you or anyone shouldn’t be in such a rush to “get it” and get over it.

I think there is a bigger picture here. They asked certain groups to isolate themselves- they are identified as the groups that will suffer and utilise the medical facilities.
This means to me .. I don’t visit my parents, they stay away from me, I stay away from any one who is at risk ie pneumonia or asthma sufferers AND they do likewise!
Those of us who will not suffer, should maintain the skeleton crew to run the ship.
So if you have been identified as one of those groups, do as your told. If you have not then act responsibly and remember you have a job to do and duty of care.

As for the ventilator stuff, you will probably find that the companies that produce the vital component (some sort of chip) have short supply so target will not be met. So be sensible instead.
Golf is fine.. just don’t play with any one or keep your distance.
Oh and stay safe, be pragmatic and consider others when they fail to consider you or themselves.

I always worry when someone, only sees one path (in this case, infect everyone).

Life is not like that and neither is this situation, narrowed vision if you only see that option. Yeah I get a great number will probably die whatever way we turn, if this continues to rip though the world.

There are so many paths that we can take, the most likely and hopeful is a combination of flatten the curve and hope 'wartime' promotes great things, which history shows it does and a vaccine comes about quicker than ever before.

I would hope, everyone would agree, is that we want to stop as many deaths as possible(young and old, fit and unwell people).

My mum & dad have decided to isolate, not because they have symptons but because they are both 75. Mum was almost in tears last night speaking to my 6 & 3 year old boys as she wont be seeing them for a while. Absolutley broke my heart but its the right thing to do.

We'll always get the selfish ones but bear in mind most of them just say things to get a rise out of people.

Thankfully we live in the modern era with technology, so staying at home doesn't mean they cant see or talk to them.

Thank goodness for stuff like Facetime and Skype etc, if they haven't got it, get something sorted for them if they haven't got something (y) Well worth it.

Can see that kind of stuff being used a lot in the lockdown that must be coming in the next week/two.

Luckily my dad is a proper tech nerd. He designs airfields for MS Flight Simulator so is a whizz with skype, BUT.... ask him to text you and it takes him 10 minutes to text "OK Russ , will do"
