I have been called into the office today with my colleague to explain why it took 5 hrs for some hire equipment to arrive in order for us to carry out a job. It wasn't our fault it was a mix up by the hire company. They constantly told us it was on it's way, similar to a taxi firm "oh yeah mate it's just around the corner" you know the kind of thing. To have this as a formal interrogation/investigation was bad enough but what made the day more sinister is the events after the interview. I rang the manager who interviewed us to ask him if I could have a photocopy of my answers, he said he didn't have a problem with that but what he did have a problem with was the large scratch on his car door that wasn't there when he arrived. I instantly told him I knew nothing about it nor did my colleague. In fact I said I am a fifty year old man and I would never consider scratching anyones car. His reply was I'm a fifty year old man and I'd like to know how that scratch got there. Effing cheek. The car park outside our office is cctv recorded and we know we did nothing and the evidence will be there to support this. Where do I stand after this indirect accusation, what would you do?

Awkward one but don't take it personally, don't get riled and don't say or do anything you might later regret.

Go in a few minutes earlier (assuming he will be there), ask him if he has had a chance yet to review the cctv and if not suggest that you both watch it as you want to know who did it as much as he does. If you then find out who was responsible, it will possibly make him feel rather awkward and you might, just might, get an apology out of him.

If he doesn't want you to watch it, don't let the matter drop. Ask him every day if he found out who did it.

Good luck.

The chances are he wont be on a forum online annoyed about it. (by that I mean he may not event remember exactly what he said so dont let yourself feel bad you done nothing )

I suggest you forget about it until you see next then as mentioned above ask if he checked out the cctv.

Thanks gentlemen, I have calmed down now and seen it in a different light, I feel sorry the guys car has been scratched, genuinely but it is for him to prove guilt and not for me to have to show my innocence. My conscience is completely clear.

No matter if your conscience is clear, it's obvious he thinks you did it. get in tomorrow and get watching that cctv before this gets out of hand and he bears a long term grudge.

Unfortunately the grudge is endemic in the company, his strings are being pulled by the area manager. We were Tupe transferred to this company and it is no secret that the area manager wanted to lay the entire workforce off and start again fresh. This is just one incident in a long line that we have to put up with on a daily basis. The problem is there is no-one else to turn to. I have just tonight joined the union just so I can have someone in my corner when needed. I would leave but why should I walk out on a job I've held for 16 years with an exemplary work record just because of this evil piece of work and his schemes.

Drawboy,
Make sure you document EVERYTHING. What was said , by who and what dates and times. If it does turn nasty, then this log will stand you in good stead in defending a constructive dismissal case. The notes will help you stick to the facts and prevent emotions getting in the way.
Heres a good link with plenty of info.

Good luck....hope everything turns out OK

Wot he said. Get a fully documented case together now with dates, times and verbatim wording as much as you can remember it plus the names of anyone else in the room at the time. Even if you don't need it for them getting rid of you (constructive dismissal), it will be a pretty strong barganing tool if this guy keeps getting funny and you threaten to go to his boss with the evidence.
