Winter Rules?

Suppose so, but some clubs have qualifiers all year round and implement winter rules when the weather dictates. As Phil says some clubs do have comps with winter rules which I am dead against.

Why is that mate ?

Mainly winter rules will effect pick and place - the tours have a number of tournaments with pick and place due to heavy rain

According to the notice board, Winter Rules at our club don't start until 22nd October. The course is currently in as good condition as it has been all year!

We normally go to WR 1st Nov or thereabouts.
But....they will bring it in sooner if conditions dictate AND delay it for the same reason..
Some of our fairways think it's July so we'll need a lot of rain to get to needing WR by November.
Just doing it by date regardless does seem a bit shortsighted...

We are still having comps a stableford on Sunday the a medal on the 11th Oct then another stableford and wednesday cup. after that we are on winter rules and will go to short course regardless of the weather.

The whole pick and place thing usually happens up here once the club has its last comp. hope to get a couple of opens in the last two weekend s of Oct.

I just don't view it as true golf. Play it as it lies. Being able to move the ball 6inches allows a player a definite advantage. Even on the fairway you are not always guaranteed a perfect lie. Being able to move the ball can be the difference between a downhill and a flat lie. Any number of ways where the lie can be improved. In summer you may be on the fairway but still not have the perfect lie. With pick and place you can have good go at getting one.

The tours are playing for money. It has no relevance to us and handicap golf. I prefer all handicap golf to be played on level terms.

But if everyone on the fairway can move their ball, surely handicap golf is being played on level terms?

There appear to be some misconceptions displayed on here - partially corrected.

Preferred Lies/'Pick, clean and place' (fairway only) is the most common, but many Clubs (and I think all should) have 'Plugged in the Rough' that allows a ball imbedded in its own pitchmark through the green (except in sand) to be lifted, cleaned and dropped (NNTH).

Application of these LRs does not preclude comps from being Qualifiers fom October to March inclusive (or later if permitted by the Area Authority).

@Oddjob. Your comment about allowing divots to recover doesn't match with what R&A seem to believe - and why there was a change about seeded divots made (from 1/1/2013 from memory). They believe that it is better to have a single divot rather than a pair of them. While Preferred Lies will make for better playing conditions - allowing a ball to be moved from an existing divot - I fail to see how it will help the overall condition of the fairways! There will in all likelihood be a 2nd divot beside the 1st and there will almost certainly be a greater number of divots created overall - because of the softer fairways. And any divots that are left unreplaced or are turned over are highly unlikely to regrow as the soil temperature is likely to be too low for seed to germinate - at least by mid Oct.

Is it still not on level terms though because everyone can pick and place ? And we normally use a scorecard distance away.

Its not level with proper golf during the summer. Score cards are sometimes marked at 6inches for these purposes.

But then in the summer courses play shorter with less run and courses arent drenched with soft plug lies - lots of differences between winter and summer golf - can't compare the two

I don't like the saying "proper golf" - it's trying to create boundaries and rules on how golf "should" be played - moving the ball out of a plug lie or away from a drenched part of the fairway or removing a lump of mud doesnt stop me playing "proper golf"

I still swing the same way , I still have to connect with the ball correctly

It is my opinion. In summer, you play the ball as it lies 99/100. Just the usual GUI and staked trees etc. In winter, rules can be used to your advantage to much for my liking. Can it what you like, its just not the same for me!

Yes it's different but being different doesnt stop it being "proper" golf

And in summer rules can be used to a players advantage also ( standing water etc )

Would you really expect someone to play a plug ball in a fairway after it has rained for 3 days ? - it would do more harm than good

And telling a pro he isn't playing proper golf because he is allowed to pick and place it on a sodden fairway

When the pros play pick and place the greens are usually soft as hell. It becomes target practice and scoring gets silly.

I am not against winter rules, I just don't want the scores counting towards handicap.

I'm sure you will agree that it is not proper golf when clubs implement teeing up during winter. ;) your club may not but many do.

Teeing up ?!

Never witnessed a club teeing up on fairways ?
