Willett doesnt want to play golf

If he is that tired he could take a week off. Most of us don't have that option though.

I know he up near the top of the game but I bet he puts a heck of a lot less effort in than the likes of Andy Murray.

playing devils advocate here but we all get holiday from work right? which a lot of us have option when to take that time off

There's a lot of grumpy old buggers on here today.

To play sport at the highest level requires such a huge mental and physical effort. If he feels that he can't bring that to the party, then stopping completely and giving himself a chance to regroup seems a perfectly sensible approach. If he just keeps playing he's just going to get more tired and more disillusioned.

Also don't get the 'he gets paid plenty' comments. He's just a human being, being paid more doesn't make him less tired. If I paid you more could you run any faster?

Being paid plenty takes away the stress of having to watch every penny closely and run his household on a pretty tight budget.

How would he cope with a physically demanding job which when he's finished for the day has to come home and do housework, diy, look after kids etc?

Golf is pretty demanding on the body though.. id say id find walking around a golf course 4 days running plus practice rounds more demanding than DIY and housework

He needs a holiday, put the clubs in the garage and forget about golf for a bit. I thing becoming stale must be a constant issue for golfers, all pro sportsmen to be fair, particularly after a long season.
This puts Rory's choice of not playing some tournaments a little into perspective, doesn't it?

Did Willet play a fuller season that Rory?
Wentworth, Rio, Turkey are the ones that come to mind.

You forgot about the physically demanding job part.

If take walking around a course for 4 days over grafting your nuts off on a site for 6 days then coming home to all the other her stuff

How would we know and why would it matter? He's not doing a normal job, he's playing sport at the highest level. If he thinks his present scheduling and approach to the game is making him less successful then he'd be a fool not to try and change it.

Can't understand why that should upset anyone.

not every job is physically demanding tho , I know I don't break a sweat lol

I dunno, maybe he just needs a 6 week summer holiday......

Defending the teachers they actually have 0 holiday a year. They are paid in leu for 4 weeks a year that they can't take and when school is closed their technically unemployed

their wages are just spread over the year to make it easier

I can see both sides of this, part of me has no sympathy, part of me can see how winning one of the biggest tournaments in the world could have a bigger mental issue than actual physical, the level of expectancey must go through the roof, when Westwood, Monty or Luke Donald miss a cut we shrug our shoulders and say it's expected, Willett will always be The Masters Champion and people will expect more. I'd rather he took time off and tried to regroup than turn to drink or drugs etc to cope and risk destroying his life.

He's a professional if he doesn't want to continue in this job so what? he's lucky he can probably afford to do very little so he can stop if he wants to - his personal choice.

Why do the 'public' think they have any right to dictate to anyone just because they may crop up on the TV/press?

Dealing with success can be just as hard as dealing with failure.

His mental attitude will have changed with that win.
He is set up for life and does not have to fight for his living anymore.
No more qualifing ever again. Life is easy.

Willet does always come across as a rather grumpy Yorkshireman

id like to see him push on but I dont know if he mentally has it

Dont feel sorry for him as such but like other sportsman it must be hard to relax at times when everything you do is in the media.. then you have to ply your trade every weekend.. travel around.. hardly take time off really (even in football the off season is about a month)

dont get me wrong they are all paid handsomely but must be mentally straining

Mentally straining in comparison to what? Electrician? Call centre worker? Mortgage advisor? Most likely all with some kind of financial issues and hoping for a holiday that is not on a credit card..

Sure to be good at sport you must focus and that is mentally draining, but then lots of jobs require total concentration and you still have the financial pressures of life which for someone who only needs to focus on swinging a golf club around are removed.

I wonder, single mother working as a nurse mentally harder existence than multi millionaire male golfer who flies in private jets to his next tournament

I worked for the gas board, taking complaints from people on pay as you go meters, if you want mentally straining try that job for a laugh xmas eve 11pm, girl ringing up with no gas in Edinburgh, being told as it is XMAS you have to go to Livingston some 25miles away (She obviously has no car or means to get there) yup, must be a strain to have to play more golf than you want

It wasn't fatigue/over-work/stress etc that kept Rory away from Rio & Turkey though, he was expected to play both until he got fears about mossies and bogeymen

Re Willett, if he has a mental issue/fatigue, its at least as valid a reason not to play as a players head not being right due to health concerns. He might need time off but in his shoes I'd prefer to play through it rather than step back for a number of weeks

I think Danny is getting a bit of a hard time on here. They want there celebrities to be down to earth but when they are honest about how they are feeling they get crucified. Just because you have money doesn't make all problems go away. I also don't think he's getting credit for the work he has put in to get to where he is right now. It's almost like people think that someone just gave him his Masters title and world ranking.
