• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Why do we dress up smart to play golf?

I always dress smartly, if brightly. Why do we do it? There is nothing like snagging an expensive jumper in a thorn bush, and getting your dry clean only trousers covered in mud. I have no idea.

I know that in my wildest dreams I will never have the sylph-like figure to wear Lindberg (and with the money they charge you would think they could find a tape measure with the right numbers on it!) so Tesco, Asda, Matalan, Cotton Traders and the pro shop sale are good enough for me.
But I do like to get my knees brown, so summer and shorts go together but I will NOT wear long socks with them.
Dress rules yes but some do need revision.

Shorts on the course? - only for the ladies please!
British men and shorts are a no go, it's just plain wrong.
I belive it is the case that light coloured loose long trousers are better at keeping you cool than exposing bare skin to the sun. With skin cancer on the up I'd cover up in the heat - brimmed hat and long lightweight trousers.
You know it makes sense!

Couldn't agree more Birdieman. It seems to me that the first golfers to reach for the shorts when the weather gets warmer, are those with the worst looking legs and the worst dress sense.

I never wear shorts to play golf, not even in Spain or Portugal. A nice light coloured pair of trousers are cooler and look better - on me anyway.

BM & Dave. I agree totally with shorts not being worn on the course. However on holiday I love nothing more than sunbathing in my swimmers with a cold beer and a good book. As long as the correct protection is used I see nowt wrong with going for the "tantastic" look!

birdie, though you're correct about keeping cool it's obvious that we're not going to agree on shorts. We see the sun so infrequently that any opportunity to remove the pasty image before venturing to foreign climes should be taken.

Could we perhaps agree on the horror perpetrated by the wearing of the 3/4 length 'trouser'?

I have seen sandals with spikes, perhaps they would be a better option to accompany shorts (though someone would still probably insist that they are worn with long socks)

Viscount 3/4 length trousers are the attire of a hobbit, not a golfer, leave them in middle earth!
I'm still cringing over these currently fashionable plastic sandal things that seem to be all the rage...simply appauling!

Odd that the guys who won't wear shorts are all from 'north of the border'. May be it just never gets hot enough up there? or, maybe the number of sunny days doesn't justify the purchase of said shorts.

I don't like shorts on a golf course (not the ladies either, most of them don't look good either), but do wear them occasionally. The key thing is white shoes, white trainer socks. Somehow I never feel like a golfer though.

Not against shorts full stop Murph, just for golfing in. I do wear shorts now and again, remember we also wear kilts up here so we dont need shorts for a bit of an airing!

To my mind, we very rarely get the weather to wear shorts in the UK ... however, when on holiday, I do take shorts with me; but as murphthemog says - it has to be white socks and tailored shorts, unlike the picture above !

what's the ruling on kilts on course?

As I live in York (nowt wrong with shorts, lad) and it is still legal to kill Scots with a bow and arrow within the City walls, I say this law should be extended to all golf courses with immediate effect. :D

I wear shorts all the time, apart from the golf course.

If i go to tesco's and its snowing outside i get strange looks and smart r's asking feeling the heat are you.

Well i walk a few paces into a car, then a few paces from the car to the shop, So it might be cold outside but i am inside so sod of and leave me alone.

Shorts and shoes just don't mix, though i did see a pair of adidas clima control golf shoes that look like trainers (and only £20 from price buster) would only be suitable for warm dry days with no mud.
Possibly a good choice for those who travel to warmer climes to play.
