Ok in most team sports you have to wear some kind of uniform/kit to distinguish yourselfs from oppositon, where as golf which is mainly an individual game with the exception of ryder cups etc. Fair enough we need golf shoes, but what is the point of the tailored trousers and collared shirts. is it just because its a sport so we shall wear what a person who plays this sport should wear?
do you like the dress code or would you prefer a more casual/relaxed approach? Perhaps for pay and play courses a more relaxed dress and save the tailored kit for private clubs ? Whats your opinion?
I once got told i couldnt play at a pay and play near me(weald of kent jon) because i had a round neck shirt on. the week after tiger won the masters wearing this

Why do I dress up smart? Becuase I look like a dirty pikey at work!!!

I think that a dress code is an important part of creating a disciplined atmosphere on the course.

I can see your point about weald, they have been known to be very picky. Some P&P's seem to have no code whatsoever.

I like dressing smart for my golf but comfort is always the priority.

Putting on my golf gear puts me in the right frame of mind in the same way that putting on my rugby kit put me in the mind set for the match. Strangely I do nto think I would play well if I just walked off the street onto the course in my jeans and a T Shirt.

I do, however, think that some courses go a bit far. If a shirt is sold as golf kit by a known brand then it should be allowed on the course. Anyone know if Nike give refunds if you buy a shirt and find that you cannot play in it.

Dress code is imperative. You don't need to fork out fortunes on Thomas Burberry when Mat Allan (matallan) works just as well. I had a 'discussion' with a guy who said he couldn't afford dress trousers and would wear his jeans on the course. His jeans were Armani and cost £180. In winter I wear the folowing

Cords ........... £8 Asda
T-shirt ......... £5 Tesco
Jumper .......... £15 salee rail at Pro Shop

It doesn't cost as much as a sleeve of Pro V1's.

It's one rule for us, and one rule for them I'm afraid MVP.

I think we dress reasonable smartly because we don't have to dive on the ground and roll around in the mud like many other sportsmen do. We also go in the bar for a drink or soup and roll or something, wearing what we played in, apart from the shoes.

If there is a more formal gathering after a match, then a shower and a change are in order, so the playing attire the becomes less smart in comparison.

We've had the 'dress code' debate many times on this forum. There's probably more life in it, but I think I've said all I want to say.

you blimmmin scots have got to learn to wear some underwear for a change!

You dress up smart to make yourself feel like a golfer instead of a N.E.D. I don't see Tiger wearing shorts and Man Utd top in the photo, do you?

All clubs will have a dress code both for the course and the clubhouse. As we have decided to either join the club or play at the club we need to respect the dress code and dress in an appropriate manner. Generally speaking, I like to dress in as comfortable clothing as possible given the time of year. Since golf, in my opinion, is a game where the 6" between the ears plays a massive part in ones success or failure, it is obviouly better if you feel good about the way you are turned out when trying to play in a competition or match.

A pair of chinos/slacks and a polo shirt would make you welcome onto any golf course on the planet. Even Tiger's outfit might raise an eyebrow at some....unless you play like him, too. Why risk it?

all proper golf cloths should be allowed, but i feel dress code should be kept.
Apart from anything else golf cloths should be cut in a way that it offers best weather protection but gives maximum mobility.

The people we aspire to be like - the Pros, dress a certain way and we like to copy that as it makes us feel a little like them. If Hogan, Nicklaus etc had dressed in t-shirts and denim shorts we'd be doing it too.
It's also the desire to conform and to be identified - the golfers uniform is thus....
I like the smart tradition and like others above don't feel properly equipped to play unless I'm dressed half decently. Possible exception in winter when ski hats, fleeces etc sometimes come out.

I'm perhap's not in a position to comment on dress code after my earlier posts :o)

However - I wouldnt feel comfortable playing in jeans and a t-shirt and I think dress codes need to be maintained. I'm not one to be splashing the stupid cash on William Hunt and J Lindberg either. A warm club Lyle and Scott jumper (from my 2006 winnings) and a waterproof suit are the most expensive pieces of clothing i have ever bought.

3 reasons why I would always dress smart on the course.

1. I like to look like a golfer, which makes me feel like a golfer, which hopefuly makes me play like a golfer. I just wouldn't feel right wearing anything else.
2. Out of respect for the traditions of the game, the course I'm on, and my fellow golfers.
3. IT'S GOLF, THIS IS WHAT WE DO.

I was just heading off to my baw baw but after looking at this I will have nightmares. Junior, have your legs EVER seen the light of day prior to this photo being taken.

Are you ALBINO ????????????

this subject gets to me a little bit.

I played at a course last summer and i was wearing a pair of very fashionable shorts which were tailered had pockets and were about knee length with no logos on them whatsoever, a lambetta polo shirt, footkoy socks and a pair of dryjoys. looking quite smart. I walked into the pro shop payed my greenfees and i could tell the pro was not having the best day by his service. after i had paid my gfees he said obviously you have another pair of shorts to change into before you play? i said no whats wroong with these i asked the are tailered and had 2 small pockets on the side! he huffed and puffed and then said i suppose you are alright!! as i left the pro shop i saw a junior teeing off in a pair of TRACKSUIT BOTTOMS AND A MAN U T SHIRT!!!!!!. Unbelievable I think some of these pros not all coz ours is an absolute belter! are stuck in the shop all day and can be rude to customers. I could have gone in and said what about that junior in the man u top but i didnt want to give him the satisfaction. He definatly saw what he was wearing because he was talking to as i arrived!!!
What do you think of the inforcement of mock necks aswell had the same problem as a lot of you guys if tiger turned up to the local course the would let him out there in high heels if he wanted. Its one rule for some and anohter for the rest. we should be consitent. Dress smart yes but lets not get petty!!
