Why do people kid themselves?

I used to play with a few players in a regular group. One was off 21, in his mid sixties, and could play to it when we first started as a group. I always wanted to play in the midweek comp but he rarely did. He always said 'I am not playing well enough for a comp' and I replied that if his handicap went up it reflected how he played and he would end up not being competitive.

Over the next few years, his handicap stayed the same and his scores got worse. He gradually stopped playing as he did not enjoy losing. If his handicap had changed he may have still been playing. He was fit enough but could not accept that a handicap is there to help even the field for all of us.

I make sure I play as many comps as I can.
