Why do people kid themselves?

I can understand this having played with a few rounds with a guy who's over 75,single figure golfer back in the day plays off around 14 should play off 24, nice guy and still wants to be competitive but just can't accept he's not such a good golfer now, just to proud.

Very common with the seniors at our club. They decided to make their weekly round none qualifying by default, and in the rare occasion they do annnounce one to be a qualifier, hardly anyone shows up, because they are all afraid their handicaps might go up 0.1 shots. When you look at their Stableford scores, it is rare that someone scores more than 30 points and scores below 20 are quite common. (Actually, with the senior ladies, every player who plays more than 30 points in her round wins a golf ball) I think, the handicap serves more as a reminder of glorious days long gone for those guys.

Every senior I've played with has claimed to have played off single figures, in fact it's a running joke between my regular PP and myself.
Must have been some hellish golfers back in the day.

I still say I play off 12 despite not having an official handicap since 2014. Even then I had not really played to it since 2013.

Why do I still say 12? I'm a fit, young adult with a decent short game and when the long game clicks I can still score well.

I would feel bad if I said I was off 18 and won, would rather get humped off 12.

Playing off 12 I managed to take onthe great RickG (my golfing idol) and Paperboy, leading by a point on the 18th.

I did rely on Rick to find my ball a lot, he found it three times on a par 5, I went on to par the hole!

I never write myself off, until a bit of paper says I don't play off 12 I will keep on saying it.

Where is this money bank?????????

You'd win nowt at my place with 33 pts in the winter. You need 42+ to even get in the prizes!

I was not talking about winning. Just saying that most folk would be happy with 33 points and would not call it a poor score [dons tin hat]

BTW I once won a stableford with 33 points, about 7 players tied and I won OCB. Just one of those strange days.
All the more memorable as my PP had 34 points and did not bother to post his card as he said it would have no chance of winning.

Is it any different to the multiple golfers up and country claiming they should be single figures or cat 1 etc yet because of social scores yet in comps it's shown thei HC is exactly right ?

Vastly different, those people don't put the single figure or Cat 1 handicap on their scorecard, they can't! the ones Chris is on about show their handicap is exactly wrong!

No difference in my eyes, vanity in both cases and equally boring to their fellow players.

It is just as irritating to hear a FC in a medal say "I can't understand it, when I played the other day (in a social game) I scored 39 points." (BTW why is it always Stableford with these folks?), as it is for the older chap to say "May be 71 now but I'm still off 11." and you know he hasn't broken 90 in years.

Neither has any chance of winning the comp.
