Today I joined two guys that i play with quite frequently in the mid week. One is 73 and the other 67. The 67 year old always insists we have a knock round without taking handicaps into account. Now im off 12, the 73 year old is off 20 and the 67 year old says he's off 12 but, to my certain knowledge, hasn't played to it in years.

So today i suggested we play in the monthly stableford, i score a poor 33 points, 73 year old 29 points and yes, youve guessed - the other guy amassed a mighty 9 points!

He still insists that 12 is correct! Why??

I wouldn't worry. As today he's only fooling himself. No wonder he doesn't want to take handicaps into account

I have no idea why.
I have mates who are the opposite to being bandits.
None have official handicaps but think they're better than they actually are.
Personally it'll take as many shots as they'll allow me to.

Vanity and misplaced pride. Surely his handicap must be increasing after each qualifier he enters and the system should be picking him up with constant 0.1s and giving him full shots back, and then there's the annual revue, so what's going on at your club?

He probably hasnt played any qualifiers for some long time

Two old guys playing golf. First guy says "can you keep an eye on this drive as my eyes don't see that far". Second guy says "no problem". First guy smacks it 200 yds and says "did you see it". Second guy says " yeah no problems". They walk down the fairway and first guy says "where is it". Second guy says " ave forgot".

Mr 12 handicapper is guy no2 that forgot when he last played to 12, and unfortunately never will.

Are they still enjoying themselves ?

If he doesn't play qualifiers then it's just a number that he appears he is happy to play using

must be tough on your pride to slip

Happy for people to say they are whatever handicap, if it is lower than they actually are.

Just don't go calling me a bandit when I smash them by 20 shots.

The 73 year old is one of the nicest, funniest guys you will ever meet. He always is a joy to play with and is still looking to improve even though hes played for ever

The other guy is someone who will, if you say its white, he'll argue that it's black, he's played probably off 12 years ago.

So is the handicap even current

No, i was staggered he said he'd enter the comp!

Vanity, pure and simple. Usually in older blokes who used to play at a lower h/c years ago and refuse to accept a decline has occurred. Daft but their egos win over good sense.

Loads of old blokes at my previous club played off false, low h/c. When their games dropped they would only play one comp or so a year, only going up 0.1 per year. Pretty much all of them have now gone inactive, since the change in system, and still claim to be low handicappers.

I think a lot of clubs probably have the same. I was partnered with an old guy in an inter-club match. He claimed he was off 11, but with his length off the tee, and general standard of play he was nowhere near that. Put it down to an off day. When we played the return game on a long course, his 11 was found out very easily. He said he doesn't bother with comps these days so no idea how it was a valid figure. He was happy with his golfing lot though

There's an old guy off 12 at my place.

He maintains that handicap all the time....that's mainly as he's a massive cheat tho, nowt to do with ability.

Amazingly every week he makes buffer or better.

My guy would have got about 12 points if i didnt pull him up a couple of scores he gave me!
