Why did you take up golf?

Took the game up around 1980. I had become hooked watched Seve, Norman, Lyle etc in the World Matchplay at Wentworth (best tourney in the world to watch at the time). There was always a hero to root for in those days. Sadly, it's a shadow of the event it used to be.

We moved to Nairn that year and, given that there are 2 Championship courses there and nothing else to do, I took up the game when 2 school mates who had moved there at the same time as me invited me for a game. Best thing I ever did. :-)

Started watching on tv circa 1997 (aged 18) and decided i liked what i saw. Began playing two years later after being able to watch golf half a dozen times a year on peasant tv, sadly an opportunity that no longer exists.

Watch it online. Loads of sites stream the golf. type in stream golf for free.

I was at the Birmingham Motor Show, around 1996 I think and there was a stand that offered people to try out some new practice net that worked out distance etc.

We all had a go and there was a pro on hand to give quick analysis and said that out of our group I had the most consistent, accurate swing (same can't be said now though!)
Think I was only 8 or 9 at the time so my Dad got me a junior set of clubs and we started hitting the driving range most Saturdays!

I played when at school with my dad. Gave up at 16 to have a car.
4 years ago a notice went on the notice board at work regarding a golf Society, It all re-started from there.

My mum and her family are from St Andrews so everybody played golf!!

My dear old Grandad was a scratch golfer and had me hitting a ball on the beach with a cut down hickory club when I was about 4! Had a hickory putter aswell so we used to putt on the Himalayas/kinburn park etc aswell as walking down to TOC to watch the 1st tee/18th green.

I always enjoyed golf but probably averaged 1 round a year for about 15 years when footy/drinking/women took over!

When I gave up footy it was the obvious choice as "my" sport, probably about 4 years now I've been playing regularly.

HID started playing the odd game here and there after a 30 year break from golf. I'd always said I wouldn't be a golf widow so went to the range one night with him mainly to wind him up. Surprised myself and him by being able to hit the ball so was back the next night as well. Then went to a Ladies open day at our club and signed up for group beginners lessons. We did pay and play for a few months then decided to join the club. Best thing ever for both of us.

I took up golf because my dad played.
He bought me a custom made 5 iron and putter when I was about 9 or 10 and I was hooked.

We didnt have SKY showing golf every weekend but we did watch the Masters and The Open on tele which was great.

The thing is, I watched it on TV because I played golf not the other way round.

Very similar to this.

My dad brought me my first set and I needed a hobby after the birth of my son.

Hooked straight away.

Started playing in earnest 12 years ago having never stepped foot on a golf course, got the bug very quickly and joined a club after 9 months, been a club member ever since.

As for TV golf, loved watching the open back in the late 70's and early 80's but although id have loved to have played then my mum couldn't afford to get me a set of clubs not to mention being a club member as she was a single parent.

As a kid watching the 87 Masters knew nothing about golf but Norman and Seve were amazing, then Mize holed that shot in the playoff!

I watched the 2002 Ryder Cup, as a sporting event it was enthralling, even though I didn't know how to play the game it was brilliant, never watched golf or ever hit a golf ball or had any interest in it, always thought it was something you did when you retired. My Mrs got me a surprise birthday present of a group of 5 lessons... boy was I surprised  but having taken the first lesson I thought it was great, the way the pro worked the lessons meant I was taking baby steps until the final lesson where we played a few holes on the course, you never know whats round the corner do you...

Played pitch and putt on and off till I was 40 then took it up properly .

Mum and Dad played in their youth but by time I came along they didn't play but older brother designed a 9 hole pitch and putt in our large garden which Dad would play occasionally

I had a heart attack a few years a go, seriously obese and drastically in need of a lifestyle change!

anyway wanted something to do that both me and the missus could do together, get me off my bum and enjoy some fresh air etc. so we took up golf :)

I always wanted to play the game but could never find the time so this was another reason to push myself into it. now 4 years down the line we are seriously hooked and love the game. Been a member of our local club for 2 years plus and feel it's one of the best decisions I have ever done.

yes I am rubbish but with the help of the game I am healthier and 5 stone lighter too

I took up golf because my dad played.

I was the opposite. Being a bit of a rebel I didn't play golf for most of my life because my dad wanted me to play. I preferred to spend my Saturday afternoons at the footy and midweek evenings in the pub. In my mid 40's, following a bust up with HID and tempted by my mates tales of golfing trips abroad, I decided to take the plunge and joined the club my dad was a member of and was lucky enough to have a few years of golf with him before he gave up due to ill health.

I was hooked and couldn't get enough of it. My mates mainly belonged to different clubs though so the away trips to foreign climes were even more special. The one disappointment though was the annual March trips to Majorca that my own club ran were not golfing trips at all. The other halves would drop the lads off at the club house but all the golf bags would then be stashed in the lockers for the next week and it was just a wall to wall alcohol fuelled binge. Nothing wrong with that but been there, done that and I want to play golf now so we did our own golf trips and still enjoyed ourselves at night.

Natural sporting progression for me

Football- until I snapped my ACL

Tennis - until the injuries hurt too much

Golf - still ok

Bowls - next game when I can't walk

Shuvhalfpenny - just before I peg out

Started by sneaking off college with some classmates, discovered one was a scratch golfer, he suffered us for long enough to get hooked, 40 years on and I still blame him.

I initially started as it was something to do in the school holidays, but more or less stopped playing in my early 20s except for the once or twice a year company golf days. I hadn't played at all for over 20 years, but when I retired it seemed a good way to occupy my days. Love it now and cant play enough.
