Why did you take up golf?

Way back many years ago (over 30 years) my dad was an avid player, but at the time, i thought like lots of teens and peers that it was "a waste of a good walk'.

time jump forward to my 41st birthday and as I do every year, take a leave day from work.. I found myself in American golf... and on complete impulse bought a full package set and decided I would play...

4 years on, and I love it.. so much so, I now have the wife and both my children involved. Currently Vice Captain to my club and also co junior organiser.
Golf life has officially taken over our whole family! So much so, that our last long weekend away.. was "shall we go somewhere close to a course"

My dad. He's awesome. The end.

Me too. Been playing since I could walk, in some form or another.

Natural sporting progression for me

Football- until I snapped my ACL

Tennis - until the injuries hurt too much

Golf - still ok

Bowls - next game when I can't walk

Shuvhalfpenny - just before I peg out

There was a thing on the radio this morning about 4 guys in Edinburgh who are in their 80s and still play hard ball squash. Get that on the list!

The lads at the pit used to go to a nine hole course in WOODHOUSE every couple of weeks and get leathered afterwards. It was the days of when you went out with "half a set". Only the posh people had a full set. Anyway that got me going.

i had an interest before that as a kid when I used to bike it 3 miles through Sherwood Forest over the pit tip to caddy at Sherwood Forest golf course. Why didn't i stick at it there. prat.

anyway I played for about ten year then had to Jack it in due to the wife having kids. I started again about three years ago after a fifteen year holiday and was bitten again.

this time I was posh "with a full set" of fake callaways me brother bought of ebay.

gobsmacked by the changes/advancement in the game in the time I was away.

will play a major part of my retirement plans in helping me to keep fit.

Took it up owing to Numptys! Yeah, that's right, Numptys - otherwise known as opposition!

At least with Golf its always all MY fault!

Had never (ever) contemplated golf prior to starting work selling cars at a garage in Tunbridge Wells in 1986. Rep from a finance company called in to introduce himself and asked if I played.
When I told him "No" he kept on and on about going out for a game and giving it a bash.
I borrowed my father in laws set of rusty old clubs (wooden headed driver and some old Palm Beach irons where the grips had gone all shiney and smooth) and gave it a bash.
About 3 months later I was the proud owner of a brand new set of Ram Tom Watson clubs and matching burgundy/white crocodile skin golf bag!:mad::mad:

Kind of natural progression for me

I have done a number of different sports over the years, squash, mountain biking, off road bikes and cars

Had been working very hard and needed an escape away at weekends otherwise ended up working more and felt the need for a new challenge and something to do when and if I ever retire

So started playing golf, will be entertaining clients for business also

Have been invited to a number of business golf days

I enjoy being in the countryside also

I started because I couldn't ride my motorbikes anymore after moving down south. Moved down here may 2007 and started to realise that everyone down south are absolute psychos on the road and speed everywhere and have no regard for motorcyclists. Also the roads are full of potholes so I kinda give up riding which was my main and only passion. So I started to get miserable and on Christmas Eve eve 2010 the missus said to me what do I want for chrimbo and I think that's when there was an advert on sky sports and it showed golf so I said golf clubs. 24hrs later had a set of dunlops and a £50 driving range card. Golf has saved my sanity as I would of well zoomed back ooop north to home. It gives me something to do and enjoy now and have tried to get my friends into it who have no hobbies.

Sorry for the ramble. :)

My dad has always played and encouraged me to take it up, but football, cricket and social life got in the way during my teens and early twenties. I always saw myself taking it up, and avidly watch the major events on TV - but starting golf was never high up on the priority list. Now, with a declining nightly social life and football reduced to 5-a-side once a week I decided the time was right and loving it!

My grandad was the greenkeeper at my local course and my uncle played, he was pretty good in his day, so I had a family connection and a lot of my pals played but I wasn't at all interested in golf. One summer holidays my mum asked if I would like to play golf, I said no and she said tough I've just paid for your membership, cost £20. So I went and ended up playing everyday in the holidays. I was 14 then and this year will be my 21st year of being a golfer.

During my time in the RAF I had the odd game but played too much hockey and cricket

About 6 years ago found out I had arthritis starting in my knee ( botched knee op ) and back issues and had to quit hockey - mate suggested golf so I bought some clubs joined a club and the rest is history.

Hey LP is back. And posting straight after Homer. It's like ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony, side by side on my piano keyboard, oh lord why can't we???

I took up golf because my dad played.
He bought me a custom made 5 iron and putter when I was about 9 or 10 and I was hooked.

We didnt have SKY showing golf every weekend but we did watch the Masters and The Open on tele which was great.

The thing is, I watched it on TV because I played golf not the other way round.

Same as you - I played football until U14's i think, then my dad decided to take it up, i went once and got hooked. Same with golf on tv....never watched golf on tv until i started playing.

I originally took up golf at about 14 because a few mates played and I made up the fourball, played for 2 summers before stopping as I became very disheartened that all my mates were hitting it 50 yards further than me (I was 5'2 and about 7 stone at 16).

I took up golf again last summer after being invited to play with some work colleagues at about half 7 in the evening the day before going back to work after a weeks holiday. I'd just driven back from Manchester where my girlfriend lives and I couldn't really be bothered, but forced myself to dig out what I considered to be 'golfy' enough clothes and whizzed over to a local'ish club. Played absolutely awful, but in the middle of all the plop I hit 2 fairway woods off the deck that went a) up in the air (I used to use a 7 wood when I was younger as I didn't have the power / ability to get a 5 wood off the ground) and b) what I considered at the time to be 'miles' (also a bit left but that didn't matter), and I was instantly re-hooked. 2 days later I had a set of irons off Gumtree, dug my old bag out the garage and have probably played about 35 rounds since, picking up bits and pieces on the way.

This year I will be joining a club and aiming to be sub-20 by the end of summer.
